Matt Lingo at the 2013 Ride + Style – FGFS

Reportage

Matt Lingo at the 2013 Ride + Style – FGFS

As far as I’m concerned, Ride + Style is the leading showcase for the top street racers and fixed freestyle riders. The days of grassroots comps are for the most part gone, leaving Ride + Style one of the few standing trick comps. It brings people from as far away as Japan to compete but most importantly, to keep the scene strong and connected.

This year, from what I can tell, people were more stoked to just fucking hang out than they were to win any award and to me, that’s the most important thing to take away from any competition. However, since it is a competition, there has to be a winner and this year’s Ride + Style FGFS champ is Matt Reyes.

Many thanks to Matt Lingo for pulling these photos together in such a timely manner. Keep on top of Matt’s work at RecFail and check out more photos from the 2013 Ride + Style track racers in the gallery.

The 2013 Red Bull #RideNStyle is Coming!

It’s almost time for Red Bull RideNStyle!

“On Saturday, May 4, Red Bull Ride + Style will return to San Francisco for the third time, reuniting the world’s best fixed gear racers and freestylers together in Justin Herman Plaza. The event also brings together four of the world’s top street artists through collaborative art on both the racecourse and the freestyle ramps.”

Texas Toast is This Weekend!

Reportage

Texas Toast is This Weekend!

If you’re within driving distance of Austin, or you’re already here for ACL, you better make it out to the Odyssey BMX Texas Toast Jam this weekend. It’s bigger and better than last year, with a tighter, more techy dirt section, a new and improved Gauntlet of Death, better street course and even a flatland section. I went out yesterday to check in on the guys and it’s a lovely, colorful mess of ramps and paint right now. Some of which look dreadfully fun to shred.

2012 Texas Toast Jam Progress

Reportage

2012 Texas Toast Jam Progress

Sure, it may look like a bunch of dudes, standing around, looking at some plywood but those are the most capable ramp builders west of the Mississippi. The crew is already cracking away at the 2012 Texas Toast Jam course. With the dirt already getting shaped and the ramps underway, you can expect it to be bigger and better than last year. I’ve seen the sketches for some of the course and its insanity.

Last week I swung by to see the guys. While I was checking in on their progress, I shot some photos with the Hasselblad. Check ’em out! And if you missed out on my photos from last year, see them here and my Recent Roll photos here.

Fixie Famous: Midwest Mayhem 3

Fixie Famous, the blog that’s piggy-backing on a fun hashtag that Jonathan Davis coined, posted the first and maybe only video coverage we’re going to see from Midwest Mayhem 3. It’s really quick and to the point, focusing on some bangers from Antonyo (Warhol?) and Boothby.

All the major trick comps going down these days have a lot to owe to Midwest Mayhem. It was really the first big competition and the pivotal moment in fixed freestyle.  After RideNStyle and other events went down this year, it’s easy to get hung up on the small turnout for MWM3, but I kind of like that.

I’m bummed I couldn’t make it out but it looks like people had a blast and a lot of these dudes are hanging out in Chicago for the rest of the month. Now the media blitz that will come from that trip will be off the wall. And even though I’m giving Fixie Famous a hard time about their name, I greatly appreciate this video…

Midwest Mayhem 3 Prizes Announced #MWM3

What I would consider the originator of the fixed freestyle competitions is back for its third year. Midwest Mayhem returns! Don’t miss out! Unless a magical bird flies me to Milwaukee and then directly to LA for free, I can’t make it again this year. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to make it out, especially with those prizes on the line.

Shiokaze 2012

Shiokaze 2012

Shiokaze is the longest-running fixed freestyle competition in the world and it’s really rad to see Japan holding on to that tradition. This year, Chacon went out and took 1st place.
