Circles Japan Personal Bike Show: Mike’s DeSalvo Titanium ‘Cross

Mike DeSalvo isn’t known for flashy paintjobs, or crazy-shaped tubing, instead, his titanium frames attract attention with a different kind of detail: precision. These bikes are made from a ti welder’s dream with their meticulously-laid beads and cable stops. Not every detail needs to be observed with a macro lens however. Step back and look at the ever-so-elegant bend to the top tube for shouldering in cross races and the bendy, swoopy stays for, ya know, looks!

This bike was on display at the Circles Japan Personal Bike Show and Mike’s Japanese customers spent plenty of time nerding out!

Geekhouse Bikes: Titanium Mudville Complete

Boston is no stranger to titanium. Back in the day, Merlin ruled that market, and later, Indy Fab. These days Firefly and Seven are cranking out beautiful ti frames and now, Geekhouse can be added to that material roster. We’ve seen Geekhouse work with titanium before, with that flashy, painted frame, but here’s a look at what the new Geekhouse Ti bikes look like raw, leaving the welds exposed. Geekhouse works exclusively with USA 3AL2.5V tubing and the Mudvilles feature thru-axles, and a Loco Machine head tube. These bikes look great and you can see for yourself below. If you’re interested in a Ti Geekhouse, wait time is around 3-4 months.

Ian’s 650b Seven Evergreen S Titanium All Road

The number of people that roll through Golden Saddle Cyclery with nice bikes on any given day is impressive. So impressive that often times, I shoot their bikes, dump the memory cards and literally forget about them until one day I stumble across the photos. Ian was visiting LA back in February from NYC, where he works in film. Knowing that LA has dirt roads for miles, he brought along his 650b Seven Cycles Evergreen S, a titanium “all-road” bike built for long days on dirt. His bike has a few trick details, including the sub fork race-Edelux light mount and those juicy Compass Babyshoe Pass tires. With the reliability of Shimano Ultegra hydro, solid Ritchey components, a titanium post and a vintage Flite, this bike is just begging for trouble in the mountains! If you see Ian, tell him LA says hi and to holler next time he’s in town!

King Cage Celebrates #MadeintheUSA with Free Shipping and Hardware

King Cage makes titanium bottle cages in Durango, Colorado. Ron’s one of my favorite personalities in the “industry” and I commend him taking a stance like this on his Instagram. I don’t know why anyone would buy a titanium bottle cage made in China when King Cage makes them in the USA for the same price.

To celebrate bad-ass made in the USA cages, Ron is offering a free water bottle, FREE made in the USA Paragon Machine Works hardware with his cages, along with free shipping in the month of December. Take advantage of this sale and celebrate made in the USA products.

Our recent trip through the Rockies to visit Porcelain Rocket’s shop was months in the making. The plan was to start with the shop visit in Calgary and then backtrack for a ride with Kevin Tweed in Banff the following day. I was excited to experience first hand the majestic Canadian Rockies, and to ride with Kevin on his home turf – but we were skunked.

In the days approaching our visit, massive wildfires burning south of the border combined with stagnant weather patterns to send a blanket of smoke over much of southern BC and Alberta. I had imagined shooting Scott’s Moots with a breathtaking Banff backdrop that I knew Kevin could lead us to, but that idea was out the window. Fortunately, Scott’s Moots holds its own. The haze lifted just enough to let an orange sun bring out the depth in the titanium, and we made some magic.

7 Bikes for 7 Wonders: Crater Lake

DeSalvo Custom Cycles made one of the sickest titanium road bikes for the 7 Bikes for 7 Wonders, reflecting Crater Lake. Inspired by the glowing blue of the lake, this frame has a raw, exposed titanium rear triangle. This video was one of my favorites because it really captures the accessible vibes of Crater Lake, even though it omits to mention the incessant mosquitos!

Follow along at the 7 Bikes for 7 Wonders site to see how you can find this bike and take it home with you!

Stinner Frameworks Now Offering Titanium

Steel is real and ti is uh, fly? You bet it is, especially when its wielded by Santa Barbara’s Stinner Frameworks. What is considered a lifeline companion tubing material, titanium offers a lively feel unmatched by other choices and is perfect for an “all-road” or cyclocross bike.

To commemorate this new tubing option, Aaron is offering a Ti stinner frame for $3,100 (frame and matched Enve fork) to 15 spots. There are only 5 spots left as I’m typing this, so make think about it, but do so with haste. After that, the frameset price will be $3,495 for the frame, painted or raw, with a painted to match Enve fork. Holler at Stinner for more information.

Forging Ahead on the Foundry Overland
Photos and words by Ryan Wilson

A couple months ago Foundry sent over their new titanium cross/gravel bike, dubbed the “Overland“, for me to spend some time running it through the wringer. From long mixed-terrain rides, endless dry/dusty Southern California fire roads, through alpine snow storms (two), bike park single track, and trekking through wilderness with it strapped to my back. This versatility is really what the Overland is built for. Foundry’s slogan may be “racing matters”, and I’m sure this bike would perform well in a frantic one hour burst on a cross course, but it is perfectly at home traversing backroads and exploring some off-the-beaten-path single track.

Foundry Brings Us the Chilkoot Titanium Road

Foundry Brings Us the Chilkoot Titanium Road

These days, I feel like road bikes aren’t getting the love they deserve. Everything’s either “all-road” or cyclocross spefic, with disc brakes and massive tire clearances but there’s something to be said about a solid, race-inspired road bike with clearance for a 28mm tire.

That’s where Foundry’s new Chilkoot titanium road bike comes into play. Built using Foundry’s proprietary 3Al/2.5V titanium double-butted tubing the Chilkoot is both a road racing machine and a bike that will last for years on end.

Because a lot of people prefer Di2 compatibility on their bikes, Foundry added hidden ports to the frame and a clean, removable cable stop to the downtube. A 1 1/4” tapered ENVE road fork adds a bit of front-end stiffness for quick accelerations and the english threaded BB will ensure a creak-free ride.

Personally, I’m impressed with the Chilkoot. Road bikes are fun and this one in particular looks like a lot of thought went into addressing a much-needed market. $4,695.00 for the complete as shown with Ultegra 6800 or as a frame for $2495.

Firefly has a saying: “every bike is a show bike” and with projects like this, it’s easy to see why. Now, I’m not sure what this symbol is referencing, although it appears to be ouroboros-inspired but seeing something personal like this, executed on a beautiful titanium frame is enough to make anyone want to flip through more shots of this bike. Luckily you can do so at the Firefly Flickr.
