For once, I’m actually sitting on some great Merckx Mondays content, so I’m going to let it float me for a few posts. This week, we’ll start off with Cooper Ray‘s lovely photos of Jay’s Colorado Merckx road. These photos were taken for Cultivar, a new enterprise arising in Brooklyn. More on that later, for now, let’s check out these lovely photos, taken on a Brooklyn rooftop, just before a sunset. Shots like this make me miss NYC.

Firefly: Builder’s Signatures
Some frame builders sign the top tubes of their bikes, while others choose to hide them elsewhere. I can only assume that’s what these symbols mean on the back of this Firefly seat tube. So drool worthy!

Baum Cycles: Field Grey Ristretto
Yes, it’s late but since the site was quiet all day, I figured I’d stir it up a bit with this Baum Ristretto. See more at the Baum Flickr.

Aaron’s Milani Road
Steel road bikes will never die. They can be taken off road, ridden in all conditions, dropped, wrecked and anything else life will toss at you. Aaron Edge is the art director for Southern Lord and as a recent Seattle to Los Angeles transplant, his Milani road bike has become his staple transportation. He took this bike off road for the first time last week and we were there together, sweating it out together.
The other morning before getting to drone out at the Southern Lord offices, I took some photos of this Beautiful Bicycle.

Team 160over90 Kits
Doug from 160over90 sent over their team kits. Sure, lycra is lycra to most but anyone who posts their design process and sketches deserves a little recognition. Head over and check it out. I’m way into these.

Manual For Speed: Dan Chabanov Portrait
Dan Chabanov will always get love here on the site. He’s a stand up guy, that enjoys beating up on other racers in the Red Hook Crit, as much as he enjoys a good split 7″. This shot from Manual For Speed is too good.

Beautiful Bicycle: A FYXO Casati Ellise
When we were in Melbourne, I came across this Casati in Shifter Bikes. It was a perfect fit for Lauren and since she had been looking for a road bike, I had to try to work out a deal with Andy to get it for her. Months later, the beast is built up for the beauty and Andy gave it some lens love before packing it up and shipping it out. Check out more lovely photos here!

Rules of the Road
Fuck the rules. The only rule that matters is having fun with your friends. Sometimes you can even sacrifice safety for fun. We did a ride today up Mt. Wilson that was one of the best rides I’ve done in recent months (I say that a lot in Cali). Jeff, Ty, Kyle, Ed, Ralphy and I woke up early and trudged it out to the mountains. Along the way, we joked, stopped for photos, and rubbed Poodle Bush all over ourselves. But most importantly, we had fun.
Ty took this shot of Kyle, getting his crossie freestyle on and I don’t even need to post any other photos from Instagram. This one seals the ride.
It was 62 miles, 6,000′ and we killed two pizzas after. Good times dudes!

Fyxomatosis: 2012 Melburn Roobaix Kit
The 2012 Melburn Roobaix is coming and like a great event organizer, Andy’s doing all he can to promote this event. All I’m going to say is, if you can make it, DO. Lauren had a blast last year and I’m sure you will too. Don’t be intimidated by Nic’s legs here. She’s not going to be able to attend this year… So you’ll still have a chance at winning the group ride.
That said, the Fyxomatosis Melburn Roobaix kits are now available. Swoop one up while they’re still hanging out.

Brenton Salo at Ira Ryan Cycles
Portland has got to be home to more frame builders per mile than anywhere else in the world. It’s staggering to go down the list of talented individuals who inhabit that great city. Also calling Portland home are a few great photographers. One of which is someone who I’ve come to admire over the years. Brenton Salo is a phenomenal photographer. He effortlessly mixes digital with analog photography and much like modern, steel framebuilders, there’s an artwork to this talent.
I reached out to Brenton and asked him to document one such artisan. Ira Ryan, like Brenton, creates works of art with his hands and tools. He uses his eyes and his hands to shape perfection. His workspace, like many builders, is rich with textures, tools and hidden treasures. See for yourself as Brenton displays both digital and medium format photography below.

Merckx Mondays
I love the random emails from all over the globe I get with “Merckx” in the subject lines. For today’s Merckx Mondays, two Stuttgart bikes make an appearance, from across the globe. Starting the Christian Wieners’ photo of this Stuttgart road, taken during the Giro de Brilliante 01, which I’m assuming is an event in Austria. You can see more photos from the event here and see more Merckx Mondays below.

100 Miles of Fun
A century in Texas can be boring as hell if you don’t plan accordingly. It’s easy to get stuck alongside a busy highway for miles on end if you’re not careful selecting your routes. When I wanted to put in a hundred or so miles a few weeks back, I had a general idea of where I wanted to go: Pedernales, Johnson City and past Hamilton Pool. Most of the roads were desolate, with minimal vehicular traffic and climbing over the hill ranges provided some excellent descents into the river valleys.
One of my favorite routes is the switchback over the river right outside of Hamilton Pool. It’s this really sharp right, over a worn-down bridge and then a steep, switchback up, landing you at the base of one of the few Cat 3 climbs in the Austin area. Four of us went out in high spirits and under the cloudy skies, we had a blast. Until the sun came out and scorched us all. This Recent Roll is dedicated to fun with friends. We totalled 110 miles and about 5,500′ with an 18mph average. Not bad.

The 2012 Fairdale Bikes Kick Ass!
Wow. To think that Fairdale started off last year with really simple singlespeeds and have branched out into everyone’s soon-to-be-favorite commuter bikes… The new Fairdale line is looking great. From the simple chromed Coaster, to the Flyer 26″ cruiser, Step-through 26″ (check out the top tube flip!) and the Weekender Disk, the whole line has something for everyone. Your local Full Factory-distributed shop will have these in stock at the end of the month.
The coolest thing about the Weekender is that Taj is about to embark on one of the best touring routes in the country on Saturday. He’s taking his Weekender from Portland to SF on a two-week tour with Sandy Carson. Jealous!
Expect more from that trip soon, but for now, head to Fairdale and check out the offerings… and on a related note, the 2012 Sunday! collection is up at Defgrip. Check that out too.

So Just How Loud are the New Profile Elite Road Hubs?
Very loud.
I recently built up a set of 24 / 28 Profile Elite Road hubs and could not believe how loud they are. In fact, they sound more like a BMX hub than a road hub. 6 pawls dig into 68 steps on the ratchet ring, making them the bane of your riding buddies’ existence.
Made in the USA, from hell hornets apparently…

Sweatpea Bicycles: Introducing the Farmers Market
Mr. Damien Riehl makes a cameo in the newest video from Sweatpea Bicycles, featuring their newest model, the Farmers Market. Aptly named for its front-end cargo capacity and still being zippy enough to handle some road rides.
