Merckx Mondays

As we were riding over to Eppy’s house, everyone kept telling me about his Merckx collection and a mural that Woof painted in his bike room. I had no idea what to expect, so imagine my surprise when I saw this Molteni painting staring me down as I entered this room. The joke of the afternoon was “there’s like 4 weeks worth of Merckx Mondays in there”…

Tokyo Fixed: Road Rocket Builds

I’m so glad there are more and more production steel road bikes available now. One of which is the Tokyo Fixed Road Rocket. Steel road bikes are great for a number of reasons and I can bark about it all day but you’ve just gotta ride one to understand.

Swing through Tokyo Fixed if you’re in London and check these bikes out. If you’re not in London, you could always just look at some recent customer builds on their Flickr. Did I mention this beast has some Columbus MAX in it?

Winter Bicycles: Thin Iggy Road

Winter Bicycles: Thin Iggy Road

There are so many dialed-in road builds popping up these days but this is one of the most unique. Eric Estlund from Winter Bicycles sent his latest beauty over, as shot by Anthony Berano from Velo Cult. His road bike, dubbed the “Thin Iggy” can fit a 35c Resist Nomad, but has plenty of room for fenders with the 28c Nomad (shown, sans fenders). As a throwback, Eric put some compact rings on a pair of Cook Brothers cranks and a wild paint job. This is simply amazing. See the rest of Anthony’s great photographs here!

Sizemore Bicycle: Matt Beers’ Training Bike II

I have a general rule that I don’t like to double up on the front page but this new Sizemore Bicycle is rule-bend-worthy. When Matt’s training bike met an untimely death by a hand of a car, Taylor made him an identical copy. Rather than going for the raw and wax finish, he covered it in a matte navy and hand-lettered his logos. This has gotta be one of the freshest and most DIY paint job I’ve seen. Check out more at the Sizemore Flickr.

Chris’ Cyclops Road

Reportage

Chris’ Cyclops Road

If you’ve been following this blog for any extended period of time, you’ll know how much I absolutely love the late Mike Mulholland’s work. There was just something so idiosyncratic, yet classic about his style and how could you overlook that head badge? While I’ve never owned a Cyclops, I once found myself in a eBay bidding war on an old t-shirt, respectfully bowing out at $100… A few months ago, Mike from MASH listed up this frame. After realizing it was way too small for me, I posted about it and a friend here in Austin scooped it up.

Chris took his time with this build. He wanted a modern road group, so he chose SRAM Red, mixed with Ciamillo Cycling Zero Gravity calipers. He even learned how to lace up wheels, selecting Chris King R45 hubs to HED Belgiums. There are a few off details with the bike as photographed here which I’ll go ahead and point out. Yes, the Thomson post is backwards and so is the front wheel. But don’t let those distract you from the double wishbone seat stays!

Here’s Looking at You Kid

My buddy Chris just completed this build and since I can’t really post portrait-oriented photos in the galleries, I figured I’d give this one some love on its own. Expect the full set tomorrow…

Milwaukee Bicycle Co: OX Platinum Road

Milwaukee Bicycle Co: OX Platinum Road

The hand-made in the USA Milwaukee Bicycle Co road frames just got a lot nicer, and lighter. I recommended to the guys that they should offer a tubeset upgrade. Hailing True Temper’s OX Platinum as one of the best tubesets out there, they looked into it and here it is. Lighter, stronger and assembled by the oldest bicycle frame manufactures in the country, the Waterford-build Milwaukee Bicycle Co road frame is a great option for a “do anything” bike.

Light touring, firetrails, singletrack, whatever you throw at this bike, it can take. The OX Platinum frames start at $819 and the Verus at $679.

Cloud Burst!

Reportage

Cloud Burst!

From the day I flew into LA, all Kyle kept saying was “we’re gonna take you on the hardest ride of your life”. All I could think was “what? we’re going to Australia?”. Turns out, Cloud Burst, aka Cloud Bonk is a tough ride. Not the hardest ride ever, but a damn tough ride. So what qualifies as a tough ride? Well, for starters, you’re climbing for like 30 miles straight, from sea level to 7,000′. And there are no shops, no spigots, no nothing to get water. Just a crap shot of drinking from “the Earth”. Previous experiences with that cunt, Mother Nature has left me bed-ridden for days… So yeah, it’s not your every day, supported, group ride through the dainty countryside like a lot of centuries I’ve done are.

Cloud Burst does live up to its nickname and yes, it is a tough ride but how can you fixate on the negatives with such a rad crew? I had so much fun this day that the photos don’t even begin to capture it. Sure, it’s beautiful and yes, these roads are some of the finest California has to offer but to experience this ride with your true friends is something else.

That and the burgers are the top are the best! In the end, my Garmin was showing under 10k of climbing, so we hit Griffith to bring it to a nice and even 120 miles and about 10,300′ of climbing.

YEESH! I will say, this is the most fun I’ve ever had on a bicycle before and these photos are my absolute favorite 35mm ride photos. Ever.

Lauren’s Casati Ellisse

Reportage

Lauren’s Casati Ellisse

There are some benefits to dating a “bike blogger” but there are more benefits to being friends with Andy from Fyxomatosis and Dan from Shifter Bikes. When we were in Melbourne, Andy had this beautiful Casati Ellisse road frame hanging up. I took one look at it and knew it had to be Lauren’s. We haggled, arm wrestled and played a few games of hangman over the cost and eventually came to an agreement. What went from a Chorus build turned to a C-Record build and then, to top it off, Dan offered to build it up, prior to shipping it out.

Weeks passed and Lauren’s bike showed up on a Saturday morning. I put it together and made sure it fit. After a quick test ride, she was ecstatic. Tomorrow we’re going to go get her fit for some road shoes and Sunday will be its first ride in Austin. I think it’s safe to say, we’re both thrilled with this bike. How could you not be? Ti Grammo Art stem, C-Record, Ambrosia wheels? Life’s too short to ride shit bikes.

Hollywood Babylon

Reportage

Hollywood Babylon

I went on a lot of rad rides while in LA and this one in particular I had always wanted to do. It’s a ride through the hills, over some dirt running trails and up the backside of the Hollywood sign. Save a pinch on the dirt, it ended up being a blast. 30 miles and 2,600′ feet was the perfect amount of riding that morning.

Recent Roll: Get Rad – California Edition

I don’t think I’ll ever want to go on a “training ride”. I have way more fun goofing off and taking photos on my ride bike than I ever would “smoking people” up a mountain. Unless there’s green involved… Both of these photos were taken on rides in Cali, expect their respective Photosets shortly. I love the one of Ty doing a wheelie up Mt. Wilson. Although, Woody clearing the chain is pretty impressive too.
