After a hefty processing and scanning bill, I finally have all of my 2013 ATOC photos. For me, one of the benefits of shooting from the hip with a 35mm camera is catching moments like this and not knowing how they’ll turn out. End of roll / end of road, coming down Mt. Diablo with Garrett, Jeremy and Julie. I’m just bummed the next exposure didn’t make the cut!

I’ve seen a lot of Merckx photos, but this one is still one of my favorites. The photographer (whoever they are) really captured that Merckx moment. Happy Monday.

Sometimes, using your critiques to fuel your creativity is the best route. Case in point is Giro’s Air Attack helmet. Some love it, others hate it, calling it a “skate helmet”, regardless of how aerodynamic it is. With that in mind, they took Ty out to a local skate park in Santa Cruz and let him chase speed around the bowl on a Cervelo…

I have no idea what’s going on here but if it gets the Golden Saddle Seal of Approval, I’m in. Still though, I played Thorr’s Hammer in lieu of the 4×4 electro and it changed the mood considerably.

Cloud Burst is my favorite ride in Los Angeles and last weekend, the Mudfoot and Golden Saddle Cyclery crew led a group ride up to and over the crest.
I can really appreciate builds like this: vintage steel with a mix of modern componentry, especially when you add a tubeset like Columbus MS into the equation. This bike rolled into Shifter Bikes while I was in Melbourne and it was one of those bikes that didn’t like to sit still. It kept wanting to roll. Was it the legacy of Greg Lemond that was trying to establish a forward momentum? Who knows… but the Campagnolo Centaur 10, Zipp wheels, Thomson cockpit and Rolls saddle probably have something to do with it.
This is Tomii number 12 if I’m not mistaken and in the short time Nao has been building, I have to say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching him progress. This latest customer project is best described as a “fat road bike”. Bigger tires, disc and Dura Ace downtube shifters. Pretty interesting component choices, wouldn’t you say? I knew that Tokyo Fixed was going through some concepts for a re-brand, but it wasn’t until seeing this post on the Independent Fabrication blog that I had heard anything concrete. Kinoko Cycles is the new Tokyo Fixed and while they’ll still obviously specialize in track and fixed gears, they’re opening up to high-end road as well. The way I see it, the more bikes, the merrier. As much as I love details and side elevations of bikes, sometimes getting right up, front and center is equally as compelling. Especially when you’re staring down a Firefly.

Andy at FYXO works exclusively with Sun and Shifter to deliver pristine complete future Eddy Merckx classics. Above is one of my favorite Merckx liveries, team Stuttgart. This one’s heading off to Sun for a little TLC and below is a classic Eddy Merckx famed for polished Campagnolo.
I can’t wait to see how both of these turn out. Maybe they’ll be a future Merckx Mondays?

When I posted a few photos of this bike, a bunch of people emailed me, asking about its history. To be honest, I’m not 100% sure what the history is, other than it’s a Sun Graphics respray in the less common Telekom livery. That and it’s got a great built kit. See that stem? Instant classic. I’ve seen a lot of Merckx bikes in Melbourne, but Paul’s is one of my favorites.
Some say the classics never die and with a bike like this, it’s hard to argue. I’ve got a few randoms floating in from some film I developed here in Melbourne and this beautiful Gios that’s currently parked at Northside Wheelers deserves its own post.
