Blakey’s Splatter Kinesis Commuter Extravaganza

Reportage

Blakey’s Splatter Kinesis Commuter Extravaganza

Ok, look. This bike might just well be one of my favorites I’ve seen in months. Why? Campag and Shimano, tapered head tube, general trickery and yes, a DIY paint splatter paint job with a matte clear coat. Blakey’s Kinesis commuter even has matching pedals and helmet (of which weren’t present). This bike rules, I’ve had splatter paint bikes before and there’s something that’s just so photogenic about them – and horribly difficult to correct white balance. Check out more of this rare bird in the Gallery!

Deux North: Hunt 3 Trailer

It’s been over a year since Deux North took us on a journey. Here’s their latest:

“Deux North, a cycling brand started by brothers James and Dylan Nord, is out to tell a different kind of story. Using primarily short documentary films these stories aren’t just about racing or riding your bike; they are about the passion behind the obsession, the freedom felt while riding, and the things we learn about ourselves and others in the saddle. It’s the kind of story you have to go out and create, or in their words, hunt.

This is the trailer for Hunt 3, a third in a series of ten trips around the world that involve beautiful roads, fast bikes, surprising people, and a natural setting that’s quite different from the brand’s home in New York City. This particular trip took a group of 5 riders, or hunters, to upstate New York. Setting up camp outside of the small town of Boonville, they split time documenting the local lumberjack competition and hundreds of miles of gorgeous riding.”

I gotta say, I’m pretty stoked on seeing more from Boonville!

Gomi’s 2011 Speedvagen ‘Surprise Me’ Road

Reportage

Gomi’s 2011 Speedvagen ‘Surprise Me’ Road

You know a steel bike is utilizing the most in technology when an accomplished raconteur like FYXO assumes it’s made from carbon fiber. No kidding. When Gomi rolled into Golden Saddle Cyclery on his 2011 Speedvagen road bike, everyone was drawn to it immediately. What’s not to love about the fabled “surprise me” paint jobs? Or that build. EDGE / ENVE, Tune, EE Cycleworks and Super Record 11 really bring this build in under 16 lbs.

And it’s steel!

Another Perspective on Bicycle Photography

Another Perspective on Bicycle Photography

Look, I photograph a lot of bicycles, sometimes under the gun due to time constraints or lighting, so when I get the chance to look at a bike from a different angle, or perspective, it really makes my day. Here’s a shot of Chris’ Speedvagen road, taken in LA, at a spot where I’ve photographed many bikes, but never thought about utilizing the location’s vantage points.

It’s not much, but for me, it made the shoot worth it, especially with a 135mm lens. More on this bike to come…

Firefly Bicycles: Rapha Continental Road

In the spirit of the Rapha Continental, the guys at Firefly have added their ‘glow’ to the list of builders who’ve contributed black bikes with a pink letter. Personally, I love that the guys use SRAM Force on most of the Continental machines. It’s like they’re meant to be ridden hard, on gravel and whatever else might be thrown in the rider’s path. Last Night We Listened to Ben Talk About #Spacebikes

I know I give Ben from Argonaut Cycles a lot of praise here on the site but with a product like his custom, made in the USA, carbon fiber #spacebikes, I don’t feel even the slightest guilty. Ben’s work is innovative and unique, two things that are hard to find these days…

Last night, Shelter Half held an open forum with Ben. People came, Ben talked and then everyone drank. It was great.

Check out a few photos in the Gallery!

Ben From Argonaut is in LA Tonight at Shelter Half

Last night Ben from Argonaut Cycles got into LA and this morning, we took him on the Local’s Only cross ride. On his road bike. Let’s just say Ben is “over steel bikes“…

After the ride, he wanted to do a bit of cleaning to his #Spacebike for his talk at Shelter Half. I thought the bike looked better dirty, but you know what people say about presentation.

Be there, 7pm sharp for free beer, finger foods and a fun Q&A session. See all the details for the showcase here.

Icarus Frames: Sportiff Road in Tokyo

Blue Lug Japan has been supporting Ian from Icarus Frames for some time now. It all started with a few track bikes, then a road bike here and there, but this frame in particular really resonates with me. With a little more casual geometry, a SON generator light, custom stem and pretty balleur parts selection, you can’t help but think of all the rad rides and roads this thing will see.
