Last weekend, Kelli from Ritte put on a ride in Calabasas, California with the help of Pedalers Fork. The ride took a group of ladies (and a few men) through the surrounding sweeping hills and mountains before returning to Pedalers Fork for food and drinks. Photographer Nick Kova was in attendance, shooting photos from the back of a moto, driven by Moi Medena. See more photos here!

It’s not everyday that I get a Merckx Mondays submission featuring a practically NOS Faema Merckx, shot in a studio nonetheless. Todd Schmidt is the owner of this bike and Marty Wood shot the photos. Both of which work at Q in Minneapolis. I met Marty during Frostbike and he said he had a Merckx to share…
Todd picked this up while he was working for Wares’ Cycle in Milwaukee. He was 16 when he started at Wares’ and instantly became overwhelmed with all things cycling. Back then, the heroes had frame companies. Names like DeRosa, Lemond, Colnago, Motta, Moser and of course, Merckx.
Fast forward to modern day. Todd, like many people, still want to relive the days of yore (i.e. the steel age). A random friend sent a note to him about a customer selling this very bike: a 1985 Eddy Merckx Professional made from Columbus SL and it wasn’t some ordinary factory paint, it was in the Faema Team livery.

Bespoked Bristol has a great interview up with Czech framebuilders Festka. This brand has been on my mind a lot lately. Their entire package is kicking serious ass. Everything is dialed: from razzle-inspired paint, to their studio photography and how sick is that Lizard rigid MTB?

Rapha’s lookbooks are always so well compiled, filled with roadscapes, portraits and inspirational riding photography. Their Spring and Summer 2014 lookbook for the training and racing line came out stellar. I’m stoked anytime there are photos of people smiling and laughing while riding their bikes.

Matt from Leader shot a video of Josh Hayes on a training ride in the Southern California mountains. I love how fit Josh is these days. We’ve both been shedding pounds… oh and SLEEP!
It’s a shame when a name like Serotta shuts their doors after years of building steel, titanium and carbon frames in the USA. When the brand collapsed, The Pros Closet on eBay liquidated a ton of frames, which is where Chris scored this Pronto Ti frameset for a killer deal. It took him a little bit to gather all the parts. At the time, Deda Superleggera parts weren’t easy to find, SRAM was in the transition from 10 to 11 speed and he was thrashing the wheels on his cross bike. Once cross season ended, it was time to dial in his road bike.
Chris already has an insane Icarus, but he wanted something new. A new mistress if you will. Being a mechanic at Mellow Johnny’s, he was rather tedious with this build, dialing it into perfection…

I really have to commend Giro on the Spring 2014 New Road Women’s line. When I first saw it at Eurobike, it really impressed me. Not only did they keep a similar style as the men’s line with the same colors and silhouettes, but they made garments specifically for women. Holler Jen!
Here are two videos from the Spring 2014 lookbook shoot, one of which is an interview with Kelli Samuelson on cycling apparel for women. After all the talk I heard from the female consumer market when the men’s first season dropped, I hope it’s received well. They really went all in on this line.

To commemorate the opening of Kinfolk’s new store at 94 Wythe in Brooklyn, Sean from King Kog commissioned Kinfolk‘s Kusaka-San to build a vintage-inspired road bike to compliment the rare Sugino 75 road group he acquired. Down to the disc wheel! This bike is insane and Kyle at Trackosaurus Rex has a great story on Kinfolk that you should really check out, along with more photos of this machine.
Blackburn‘s got a great vignette up featuring some of their rangers, all with various cycling backgrounds.
Hubert from Cycles d’Autremont has been in town for a few days now, en route back to Burlington, Vermont. He brought two bikes with him on his trip, one of which being this deep red road bike. The color is what really caught my eye, which coincidentally came from a reference in Rem Koolhaas’ book Colors – Hubert’s an ex-architect as well…
Some details, which will probably catch the eye of builders off the bat: To keep the proportions balanced on this 52cm road bike, Hubert machined in-house a 1.25″ taper head tube and ran a Chris King Devolution headset for proper stack.
He then used a tapered top tube from Deda so he could run a 27.2 post, 25mm Deda Chainstays and thinner seat stays.
Dura Ace, ENVE and Chris King, Challenge Strada tires… Yep. This thing is stylish! As described by Hubert “this thing for me was an exercise in doing a new-school bike”. Believe it or not, bikes like this are much cheaper for a builder like Hubert to make. The whole thing goes together much faster than a randonneur frame or a traditional lugged road.

I really, really, really love the work of Rick Hunter. In fact, if I didn’t have a plump stable already, I would get him to build me something. What? I don’t know but after seeing this Easton Cycling Dream Bike, something tells me it’d look fast!

Man, this bike looks so good. It’s like how a bike looks going to a cocktail party. Super classy build from Baum!
Last summer, after I watched my mom cross the finish line of her first century, I went over to congratulate her and took her bike away so she could sit down. She has been riding mostly flat routes back home in coastal North Carolina but that century packed in 5,000′ of elevation. After watching this woman fight against all kinds of internal struggles on that ride, I promised that I’d set her up with a proper road bike this year.
It seems that I always go to Ian Sutton of Icarus Frames when it comes to building custom bikes for the women in my life (Lauren’s Commuter), so I contacted Ian for this one.
Keeping it simple, we went with True Temper OX Platinum, an ENVE fork and a Paragon removable hanger. It just got back from the painters at Circle A and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results!

While America watches grown men wearing spandex slam into each other repetedly tonight (no, it’s not a Cat 5 road crit), I’m more stoked on hearing that the ASO announced there will be a women’s race at the 2014 Tour de France. Also, I thought it was coincidental that this documentary came across my radar last week…
Half the Road is a documentary that explores the world of women’s professional cycling and why there is a great deal of inequality in the sport. But it’s not a solely a call for action, it also features Kathryn Bertine’s quest to make the 2012 Olympics. You can read about it more here and donate here!
