Chasing Peaks in the Cascade Range: Part 1

It started last fall when I got my first taste of the Pacific Northwest on a one week road trip, riding in parts of Northern California and up into the Cascade mountains of Central Oregon. Immediately following that trip I started laying the groundwork for another trip that would span the entire range of the Cascades from California’s Lassen National Park to Washington’s Mount Baker, near the US/Canada border. 15+ days of volcanic peaks, lush rain forests, and tired legs.
Cielo is really striving to make better bicycles, not only in craft, but in their use:

I keep going through my hard drive and finding little gems like this. If you’ve ever seen the old Eddy Merckx Professional catalog photos, then you’ve seen this frame before. These gold-plated Merckx frames are extremely rare. So rare that this is the only one I’ve seen and it was sitting on the counter at Shifter Bikes when I visited Dan last month.
The original finish is still intact, save for where the precious owner’s sweat caused the plating to chip off. This patina tells a story and I can only hope that it’ll never have a respray.

Having someone like Josh Hayes around your office is a valuable asset. With all the logistics, red tape, and TPS reports that can seem to work against getting shit done, sometimes you just need someone to call a situation out for what it is, and then promptly return to their computer to blast Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”.

To bid Mr. “Shut Up Legs” adieu, Trek has created a chrome bike, helmet, shoes, and custom kit.
“Jens’ team-issued Madone 7 Series is a chrome-colored vision that took Trek Project One artists more than a week to perfectly polish. Trek designers, having worked with Jens in the past, understood the moments and teams throughout the rider’s seventeen year career that hold the greatest significance and incorporated them through a graphic that runs the length of the top tube. The down tube includes a running tally of the number of souls Voigt has crushed in his career of attacking, though the number is a conservative estimate…”

Eric from Winter continues with yet another stunning complete bike. This one is dubbed the Volante. Read on for his explanation of what this bike means to Eric and see more of Anthony’s photos.
As a frame builder, Ian Sutton of Icarus Frames has built many people their dream bikes. Road, track, cross, touring, light-touring and even a few mountain bikes. Most recently, he’s been building a lot of lightweight road frames with modern tubesets like True Temper’s S3.
Paired with Columbus’ oversized stays, Ian got to work on his own S3 frame. Since he doesn’t often build with this tubeset, he wanted to try it out for himself before recommending it to any customer for their own frame.
When he finished the frame, it went off to Circle A for paint and the locals here in Austin pitched in for some parts so he could get it rolling. Thanks to David from Nelo’s and Chris from Mellow Johnny’s for putting this bike together for Ian!
To top it off, Josh from Sparse sent Ian a set of lights to match.
Ian and I joked about hating our long head tubes, but that’s what we ride and for this being such a tall bike, I think it looks extremely well balanced. Now if I can just get him out into the hills!

I miss that town all the time. Actually, I just miss the West Coast, period. Luckily, this weekend, Lauren and I are leaving for a proper vacation. We’ve got a week to drive from Portland to Los Angeles (which isn’t nearly enough time) and I’ll be shooting vacation photos the whole way.
Hopefully, if you have never been down HWY 1, the next week will make you want to do so.

Eric at Winter, like many builders, has been busy, busy, busy with frames, the most recent being this Consano All-Road. This frame is equipped with clearances for bigger tires, while maintaining a road geometry and feel. Equipped with PAUL MiniMotos for stopping power and a deep red coat of paint from none other than Keith Anderson.

There are very few experiences like riding a custom bicycle, but when it comes down to it, there are plenty of frames out there that are completely fitting for most people. These frames were designed to be raced, or just plain ridden, like many of the bikes on the market today. While they might not be custom-fit, they were fine-tuned for their intended use. In short: if the frame fits, shred the shit out of it.
Cole was looking for a new road frame last year and while it was tempting to go continue saving for a custom steel rig, he decided to keen an eye on eBay and Craigslist, in hopes that something, light, tight and Italian might pop up in his size. Low and behold, it did. A NOS Rossin crit frame from the early 90’s hit eBay one day and soon, it arrived in Austin. All for around $700.
He chose Campagnolo Athena 11, Mavic Open Pro rims, a classic 3TTT Pro Chrome Columbus stem, Deda bars, Zipp post, Fizik Antares VS saddle, Speedplay pedals and some reliable Conti rubber. The build is very tasteful and the lines of this classic race bike are seducing enough for even the seasoned carbon ‘pro-minded’ consumer to second guess their recent ‘upgrade’…
