Friday in the Santa Monica Mountains

I recently got Cari an All-City Mr. Pink. She really loves her Elephant Bikes NFE but wanted something zippier to ride around town and go on longer rides with not only me but her girlfriends who often organize ladies-only road rides. I knew if I left it to her to buy a new bike, she’d never do it, as someone who prefers to be frugal and spend her money on experiences, rather than possessions. Even though I see bicycles as vessels for said experiences.

Anyway, her Mr. Pink showed up to Golden Saddle, it got built up, I swapped out her saddle and gave her some special edition Yanco bags I had made from the California Sage pattern. We spun around town a few times before ramping up to a big, tough ride.

Yesterday we rode through the Hollywood Hills, up to Mulholland Drive and across the Santa Monica Mountains to Topanga, before dropping down to the coast for some food. After meeting a friend for lunch, we pedaled down to Santa Monica and took the Expo subway line back to Silver Lake. Our ride came in at 40 miles and 4,000′. It was the longest ride Cari’s ever been on, and surely offered some challenges for someone who’s used to riding a 27.5″ x 2.0″ tire on rocky dirt roads.

Now her biggest challenge is finding clothing that isn’t “overtly bike geeky.” One step at a time…

Some say the climb to the top in Hollywood is almost impossible. Cyclists beg to differ…

The Pale Mountains Road

Here’s one from PedalED’s latest video Journal entry:

“The mountains are my life, I live here, my house is here and my love too. The roads that surround my house they unravel into the woods until they reach the high silver-colored peaks and limestone summits that form a stone ring around the village. I know all of those peaks, I have been up there hundreds of times, I know all the paths, I know all the small lakes created from ice, I know every stone and I know how hard and beautiful it is to get there. When I look at those peaks my mind blows up into thousands of different memories related to them.”

Babylon Rides

My buddy Tyler is moving to California from Austin, TX to work at Strava in San Francisco. On his drive to his new home, he swung through Los Angeles for two days. While yesterday was a grunt of a dirt ride, today we found our pain in the Hollywood Hills. I love taking people on rides in LA and I only wish we could round out his experience on mountain bikes! Next time, buddy!

HIA Velo Introduces Allied Cycle Works and the US-Made ALFA Road

I am very excited about this project. While there are other US-made carbon road frames on the market, the scope and scale of Allied Cycle Works, under the HIA Velo umbrella, is very promising. Their first road frame is the ALFA, and it’s made in their Arkansas facilities from start to finish. There’s more on this to come, but for now, you can read the press-release below.

No22 Bicycles: the Aurora Disc Road

With flat mount brakes, a carbon seat tube and titanium main tubes, the latest from No22 Bicycles is one of the slickest looking disc road bike on the market. At first glance, even I didn’t notice the disc rotors… The Aurora is made in the USA and backed with a 10-year warranty. Check out more information on the Aurora at No22.

A Team Dream Stinner Frameworks Lemond Homage Road

A Team Dream Stinner Frameworks Lemond Homage Road

We all have our favorite cyclists or teams from the 80’s and 90’s. For Sean of Team Dream Team, it was the early 90’s and Greg Lemond, specifically that slick Calfee-built Team Z bike. The red to yellow to blue tri-fade has long been a favorite of Sean’s and that became the precedent for this new Stinner Frameworks road bike.

Sean’s already got a race-fit road bike, but he wanted one with a bit more head tube, partially for a less aggressive fit, but also for longevity. He wants to be riding this bike for a long, long time, even after his flexibility has been reduced due to age. Mid-life crisis bike? Maybe, but I commend Sean looking at the long-term lifespan of this bike. It literally is all he could ever want in a road bike and more.

The bike was spec’d with Campagnolo Super Record 11, a NOS Flite saddle, with ENVE parts and Mavic Ksyrium R-SYS SLR wheels and built by the capable hands at Golden Saddle Cyclery. If you’re going to NAHBS, look for it there, and expect a photoshoot of this bike and the original Team Z Calfee in the near future.

The 2017 Mr. Pink Has a Carbon Fork

The 2017 Mr. Pink Has a Carbon Fork

Ok, yeah, technically there is an “embargo” on this release for tomorrow, but you know what? I don’t care. Jeff is crashing at my house while he’s here in LA, and I hauled all my camera gear up to an overlook to photograph this bike at sunset, so I’m posting it a few hours before the embargo. That means a few things: there’s no link for this bike on the All-City site yet, so you can’t get every single spec and detail. Edit: well, they just pushed it live…

I can tell you the size 55cm weighs 20lbs on the nose (the 52cm pictured comes in under 20lbs), completely stock and the new Whisky carbon fork was developed specifically by All-City for this bike. The new fork has the same rake and tire clearance, yet weights 1.45lbs lighter than the steel fork. These frames are still made from Columbus Zona tubing.

Currently, there will no longer be steel forks offered on the Mr. Pink. The Whisky fork is replacing them. A bit of intel however: All-City is making a limited run of pink Whisky forks for all the current owners of last year’s model to buy and as you can see, the new Mr. Pink is an homage to the classic Motorola Cycling Team. Yay, Merckx!

We love the Mr. Pink here at the Radavist. If you wish to read my review, check it out in the Related Entries in the left column. Also, Whisky will be offering this 1 1/8″ fork in their 2017 lineup. More on that later. For now, check out more photos below and see full specs at All-City.

Pat’s Little Prince Firefly Disc Road

Reportage

Pat’s Little Prince Firefly Disc Road

“One sees clearly only with the heart, anything essential is invisible to the eye.” This quote is from the novella the Little Prince and really resonated with Pat, the owner of this new Firefly disc road. What a fitting mantra for a bike that is designed to climb and descend mountain passes in Los Angeles by utilizing Shimano’s flat-mount disc brakes, White Industry 30mm spindle cranks, a beautiful segmented wishbone seatstay, a Parlee fork and supple Compass tires. Raw titanium bikes don’t usually do it for me, but this one sits like a dream.

Congrats to Pat and the team at Firefly for building up yet another Beautiful Bicycle for the mountains of Los Angeles!
