I got back a few rolls of film from the 2012 NW Rapha Gentlemen’s Race and totally forgot about this photo I took of Ty with his Hufnagel Cross, prior to his roll-out. That bike is so nice.

My View for all of Yesterday #RGR
Yesterday was the 2012 NW Rapha Gentlemen’s Race and like last year, I was out for the entire course, camera in hand. I found myself tailing Wooly Mammoth, a team from Austin, TX, so a lot of my photos are of posteriors, out of the saddle. More to come this week!

Rapha: The Chris King Gourmet Century
Photos by Jeremy Dunn
I’ve really come to admire photos that are taken while riding, much moreso than staged photo shoots. So it’s nice to see Jeremy’s photos and accompanying write-up of the 2012 Chris King Gourmet Century on the Rapha blog. That shot of Cindy is too good!

2011 NW Rapha Gentlemen’s Race
Mixed in with my rolls of film from my 2011 Summer Tour were a few random photos. We already saw a couple from LOW and now here’s a handful from the 2011 Rapha Gentlemen’s Race that took place just outside of Portland last year. Truth be told, I’m way more into these photos after sitting on them for a year. Maybe it’s because I haven’t looked at them in some time, or maybe it’s more of that nagging nostalgia. For whatever reason, I’m really digging these and they can only inspire me to do an even better job covering the event this year.
Man, that HP5 looks great…

2012 Rapha NE Gentlemen’s Race
The 2012 Rapha NE Gentlemen’s Race was no joke. Over 120 miles and racking in over 13,000′ of elevation through the countryside of New Hampshire and Vermont. I don’t care, that shit looked fun.

Rapha Continental: Alberta Canada with Alex Stieda
Now that the Tour is over, let’s reflect a bit, vis a via the newest video from the Rapha Continental series. Although it’s a bit long, what else do you have to do on this hot and humid Sunday?
“The latest film from the Rapha Continental North America documents a ride led by Alex Stieda, the first man from North America to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France. A tour of a different kind, the Continental riders rode with Stieda over three days amongst the dramatic mountains of Alberta, Canada.”

Celebrate the Tour with Rapha’s 5 Decades T-Shirts
The Tour is in full swing and as with any great stage race, there are legends. Riders who have not only conquered the countryside and mountains once, but five or more times. It began in 1962 with Jacques Anquetil, then in 1972, Eddy Merckx, 1982, Bernard Hinault, 1992, Miguel Indurain and in 2002, Lance Armstrong. Rapha’s 5 Decades t-shirts celebrate these men and their accomplishments.
These high quality cotton tees celebrate 50 years, or 5 decades, of trade teams returning to the Tour. Each of the 5 colorways play tribute to the respected team liveries. These shirts are cut slim, with side panels and a dropped tail for a better cycling fit. While they are not jerseys, per se, they do have a back pocket and are quite comfortable.
Each shirt has a unique printed emblem, dates and other details representing each legend. You know, the kind of thing that Rapha is known for… They cost $60 each or $240.00 for all 5 shirts bundled in a limited edition mussette.

Rapha: Self Survey
I’ll always say I don’t like posting photos of myself, but I can’t pass up this one. A few weeks back, I met up with George Marshall from the Albion to get my portrait taken for the Rapha Survey. But what bike? My Icarus of course…

Rapha: Colombian Super-Lightweight Jersey
This looks killer.
“DUE IN STOCK MID JUNE. A tribute to the combative Colombian riders of the 1980s, this high-performance cycling jersey has been developed for the hottest, most humid conditions. It is made from three proprietary technical fabrics developed exclusively for Rapha.
Please note: $5 from each jersey will go to the Rigoberto Urán Cycling Club in Urrao, which gives disadvantaged children in Colombia the opportunity to ride and race bikes.”
$150 from Rapha. Sign up for their email notifications to be alerted when it’s in stock.

Rapha: Circle of Death Jersey
To celebrate the bird of prey, the bearded vulture, or Lammergeier, that inhabit one of the most dangerous loops in the Pyrenees mountains, Rapha designed the Circle of Death Jersey. Here’s a little background:
“Circle of Death is the infamous loop of Pyrenean mountains that contains the Col d’Aubisque, Col d’Aspin, Col de Peyresourde and the mighty Col du Tourmalet – all of which feature on the route of this year’s Etape Acte II, Pau-Luchon. The first riders to challenge these punishing ascents were understandably apprehensive about what awaited them; not simply the altitude but the creatures that resided there, such as bears and vultures.
While bears are now rarely seen in these parts, birds of prey still patrol the valleys and peaks. And none are more mercurial than the Lammergeier, or bearded vulture. Feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals, the Lammergeier can swallow whole bones up to the size of a lamb’s femur and its powerful digestive system quickly dissolves even large pieces. The Lammergeier has learned to crack bones too large to be swallowed by carrying them up to a height and then dropping them onto rocks below, smashing them into smaller pieces and exposing the nutritious marrow. Its old name of Ossifrage meaning bone breaker relates to this habit. For intrepid Etape riders labouring up these monstrous climbs, the sight of the birds circling overhead is likely to be an ominous one.”

Rapha Continental: Assynt
At this point, it’s a known fact that the Rapha Continental videos are unmatched. The Continental series has produced some great videos over the years and now with the following video, Assynt we get a look into some of the oldest coastlines in the world. I gotta admit, the Elder Futhark is a nice addition here.

Rapha: SRAM at the ATOC 2012
The main reason I went on the 2012 ATOC was to shoot photos for Rapha. Jeremy wanted to piece together some stories, in conjunction with my blog coverage. These posts break down the larger significance of the tour, with relation to the brand and even how other companies’ support over the years have aided in America’s greatest stage race.
SRAM is a huge supporter of the ATOC and Jeremy wrote a great pice on the Rapha Blog explaining why. Head over and check it out.

Cole’s Indy Fab Cross
I love the old Somerville-era Indy Fab bikes from the early 2000’s. When I walked past this beaut at the Golden Saddle Cyclery Champagne Brunch, I stopped in my tracks and immediately began to look it over. Who on Earth had such style? Turns out, it was Cole. Big surprise there. You’ll recognize this mustache’d face from a lot of the Rapha imagery and videos. I’ve spent some time hanging out with Cole but had never seen this steed.
After shooting a few photos of it leaned against a wall, I got Cole to take it out into the street for some 50mm lens love. Man, what a looker!
