The guys at Full Frame Collective interviewed Austin-local photographer and BMX’r Sandy Carson. I’ve long been a fan of his work and his current projects are very interesting. Check out what he’s got to say over at Full Frame Collective.

2013 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships
“Cross racing is deceptively painful and surprisingly fun.” This sentence best sums up what cyclocross is and at the 2013 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships, the conditions were both painful and fun. The following Guest Gallery was compiled by photographers Dave Schlabowske, Peter DiAntoni, Darren Hauck and Jeffrey Phelps for a forthcoming project book on the ‘cross nats. See the full description below.
Many thanks to Peter from COG for setting this up!

Regular Riders 02
I haven’t spent this much time in Austin since last summer, and it’s got me out and about every day with the Hasselblad, shooting rider portraits for the Rapha Survey. Here’s a group of a few recents that I thought turned out great.

Beautiful Bicycle: Darren Baum’s 650B MTB
Around the time of the Australian Custom Bike Show, Baum Cycles sent me photos of Darren’s own 650B Extensa MTB. Because it was going to be unveiled at the show, I wanted to wait a little while before posting it. I know a lot of you want to see more MTB content on the site and I can’t think of a better offering to the gods of dirt.
Built with SRAM’s XX1, this is a die hard MTBr’s dream machine and it’s already got me contemplating my own 650B MTB.

Pelizzoli World: Happiness?
I couldn’t help but chuckle at this photo on the Pelizzoli World Facebook entitled “Happiness?”.
Especially when compared to this photo.

Recent Roll: Having the Wind Knocked Out of You
Last weekend was the Texas State Cyclocross Championships. I headed out with my Hasselblad and my Leica to shoot some photos. While I’m in the midst of scanning everything, here’s a shot of Chris Lee, post-wreck. His bars got clipped, on a fast downhill section, sending them sideways and Chris, over the bars onto his chest. He sat there, catching his breath and moments later, his tube exploded from the popped bead. Luckily, the dude is ok.
More photos to come.

Beat the Clock Cycling New Years Day Alley Cross
A few months back, some friends decided to start up a cycling club called Beat the Clock Cycling. It was started by Jon, the owner of Beat the Clock Messengers. The idea was to create a club that would throw local events, with one thing in mind: fun. Group rides, parties, goof-off races and everything in between.
So far, it’s pretty low-key but on New Years Day, a couple dozen people got together for a little impromptu Alley Cross race on the East Side of Austin. I slept in and missed the actual race, but took my Hasselblad out for a quick roll of film at the finish. Check it out in the Gallery!

Horse Cycles: Blue Stainless Touring Bike
Photos by Nate Mumford
Thomas from Horse Cycles had this in his shop when I visited him back in October and let me tell you, that blue pops even more in person. Check out more of Nate’s lovely photos at the Horse Flickr. I really like that rear rack. Nicely done man.

PiNP 2012: A Year in 55 Photos
In 2012, PiNP’s content was like a pinball machine. It seemed like every other month, I’d find myself in another city. Some familiar, some new, but I traveled everywhere with my bike and camera in hand, ready to see what was out there. Throughout these travels, I formed a lot of strong friendships with a lot of incredible people. Some of which have become my best of friends. We rode hard, we partied harder and somehow, I managed to keep the year in focus.
Here’s the PiNP 2012: A Year in 55 Photos…

The Athletic: Alchemy in Red Rocks
The Athletic is a relatively new site that’s still in its infancy but the curator is far from a new-jack. Jeremy Dunn, formally of Embrocation and currently Rapha has been working on a new publication that will take a slightly different look at the cycling world we live in. Mostly, he’s a really great narrator and the man can take a folder of photos and create a dialog. I know this because that’s how we covered the 2012 ATOC for the Rapha blog.
I hate to call ideas “projects” but he’s got some ambitious plans for 2013. Hopefully which will include some cross-pollination with PiNP. For now, head over to the Athletic and check out a story on the recently relocated Alchemy Bicycle Co. These ex-patriots of Austin have found themselves in Colorado, which appears to be the next Portland for frame builders.

Jorge’s Bilenky Track
I’ve been spending the past few days going through my “Year in Review” content and I stumbled upon these photos from the 2012 Philly Bike Expo that never made it up on the site. If you’ve spent any amount of time in Philly on your bike, chances are you’ve seen this bike zipping around town. Jorge’s Bilenky track has seen plenty of street time in its day. Prior to Jorge owning it, this green machine was owned by Roland at REload. Made by Bilenky in Philly, complete with S&S couplers, this is the ideal travel bike. I even hear there’s an S&S REload bag to match. More people need to make S&S bags!

The 2013 PiNP Calendar: January
Over the past few months, I’ve had numerous people request a PiNP calendar and rather than make something to sell you, I thought I’d just give it away. On the first of each month, I’ll be posting a PDF file here on the site, allowing you to print this letter-sized document as you wish. The first month features my Argonaut road bike, along with EXIF information and location of the photo.
Enjoy!

Damian Riehl: Sharkey’s Manifest
Damian’s photos of Portland bike messengers are always great. Take this photo of Sharkey’s hand-scrawled manifest from earlier this year. So good!
I’ve really come to enjoy Damian’s daily photo upload. Follow his Tumblr, if you don’t already.

Kyle’s All-City Nature Boy Zona
There are two people I will always claim as an early inspiration for PiNP: Andy from FYXO and Kyle from Tracko. These two have become some of my best friends and while their blogs both tote track bike-inspired names, it’s clear that they have embraced all forms of cycling over the years.
Kyle in particular has some very stringent requirements when it comes to products he’ll use and bikes he’ll own. He’s a big advocate of made in the USA bicycles, so I was surprised when I saw him riding the All-City Nature Boy Zona, especially when he has a perfectly fine Kelly SS CX. The reasoning? He loves the way it rides and supports All-City’s #partybrand ideals. Or something…

Heal Up Woody
Woody, co-owner of Golden Saddle Cyclery, National track champion, actual US Olympic team mechanic and just all around good dude was recently hurt while mountain biking in Sedona, Arizona.
This post is dedicated to putting a smile on your local shop mechanic’s face. So make sure you tip! It doesn’t even have to be money, the gift of a cupcake, a beer, a coffee, or even a bottle of booze will make even the surliest of mechanics smile. I don’t want to ignite a Reservoir Dogs debate, I just want to let you know that they appreciate it!
In the meantime, let’s send Woody some good wishes. He’s all broken. Read up more at GSC.
Miss ya buddy.

Total Randomness
November and December have been a lot busier than I anticipated. Usually, it’s my time to get back into a daily routine of riding, riding, riding but I found myself traveling more and more these past few weeks. This Recent Roll is a series of snapshots taken in Portland, Austin and Los Angeles during that time. Shot with my Contax G2 and Kodak E100VS. Enjoy.
