Travis’s Favorite Products of 2023

Travis’s Favorite Products of 2023

It’s Travis Engel’s turn to go through the gear that made his year. Somehow, he managed to resist the urge to fill his list with movie podcasts and carbon full-suspension bikes (though there are a couple movie podcasts down in his Playlist). Instead, he’s got an eclectic collection of on- and off-bike goodies. None of them actually came out in 2023, but each played a uniquely pivotal role for him this year.

22.2 Ain’t Dead! A Look at the Paul Component Engineering 22.2 Boxcar 6-Bolt Face Stem

⌀22.2mm or 7/8″ bars were all they had back during the genesis of the almighty MOUNTAINBIKE. Riders would take the entire cockpit off their dirtbikes and flat track racers: Magura L363.20 bars, Magura brake/clutch levers, and even Magura grips, mounting them to SR or Cinelli quill stems. A lot has changed since the late 1970s but one thing remains: people love these small-diameter clamp bars for their mountain cruisers, klunkers, hardtails, and rigid MTBs. You know, the bikes that get ridden super hard!

Paul Component Engineering offers their normal Boxcar stem in a ⌀22.2mm clamp, but today they announced a 6-bolt faceplate Boxcar Limited stem ($147.50 – $166.50).

The Tale of the Humongous Rock Lobster

Reportage

The Tale of the Humongous Rock Lobster

This is the story of a perpetually unfinished project, but also of a really cool bike that’s taken me a lot of great places – and how it came to me is its own unlikely story. The fact that a custom Rock Lobster built for someone else has been the best fitting bike I’ve ever owned is pure coincidence, particularly as I would learn that it didn’t quite fit the original owner as they had hoped. Settle in for the Tale of the Humongous Rock Lobster.

2023 MADE Bike Show: Patrick from PAUL’s SE Lager Mullet Bike

We’re here at the 2023 MADE Show and will be rolling out unique, custom bikes over the next week. Before we jump into the show bikes, we wanted to showcase Patrick‘s mullet bike. Patrick is a machinist at PAUL Component Engineering and he brought his SE Lager out to Portland to pedal around the Rose City while the show is going on. John caught Patrick, fresh out of bed this morning, pre-coffee and all to document this illustrious machine of beausage and beautiful PAUL Parts, so let’s check it out below.
