I have met a lot of interesting people on the road. All through bikes. People from all walks of life, with various careers, personalities and ambitions. Sometimes those people become good friends. And that’s how Omar and I became friends. What started as a haircut, led to drinking, then more drinking, some karaoke, bad tattoos (have we even ridden yet man?) and finally, another haircut. Vinny’s Barbershop is my go-to spot for a trim when I’m in LA and it’s not just because Omar knows how to take 20+ years off with an hour-long session…

A Few More Austin Portraits
Austin has a lot of personality out on the streets and these Hasselblad portraits are turning out great. Check two more out below.

The Norse Photo Has a New Layout
For those of you who might want to look at the photos from PiNP in a wide-open format, check out the Norse Photo‘s new layout. I’ll be posting a lot of off-topic medium format stuff over the next few days, as well as mixing in some recent 35mm shots. If you’re on Tumblr, feel free to follow and reblog. All photos are high res as of the past two weeks.

Damian Riehl: A Few Old Dinosaurs
If you follow Damian on his Tumblr, you’ll notice his ability to capture people in very candid poses, almost like they didn’t even realize he had a camera on him. These last few photos of some of the “old dinosaurs”, as he calls them, of Portland are perfect. Head over to his Flickr to check a few more out.

Map Cycles
Mitch from Map Cycles has moved to Chico, California from Portland and I managed to sneak into his shop for some quick lens love before shooting that gorgeous Disk-Ville Porteur. I’ll be real honest here. I wasn’t even going to post these photos. I didn’t have a lot of time to shoot and most of the shop was packed up already. But I really like how short and sweet this set is.

#GrandpasaurusRex
For those who have never seen Tracko before, I’m sorry. Tracko is no more. Now we’re stuck with Grandpasaurus Rex. I’m not so sure that’s necessarily a bad thing either. Check out a few more shots from my Recent Roll below.

Signal Cycles
Nate Meschke and Matt Cardinal began Signal Cycles in 2007 and in that time, they’ve produced some absolutely beautiful bicycles. Not just commuters either. Recently, Matt’s Cross Bike made an appearance here and their Saltzman Road frames are lovely. Bottom line, if you’ve spent any time looking at Pacific Northwest builders, Signal has crossed your radar a few times. Matt was kind enough to meet with me on his day off, and let me shoot some photos in their space. Check out more below!

Yanco’s Waterford Track
Yanco is one tough dude. He recently completed a 100 mile race. Which he ran and every time I’ve rode with him, he’s in the big ring the whole time. He’s also the fella behind all the Yancosaurus Rex products, like those slick Ramblin Rolls that no one can get their hands on… I shot a few photos of him and his Waterford track bike outside GSC while I was in LA. Check em out!

Brenton Salo: Sharky’s Heart Knees
Seeing Sharky in Portland can be described as seeing a “ball of muscle” wound up and spinning on his track bike. Brenton happened to get a great shot of Sharky at rest, with his knee tattoos in focus. Great photo man.

Velo Cult
If there’s one thing shooting with the Hasselblad has taught me it’s selection. Velo Cult‘s new location in Portland is far too massive to capture in a roll (or in this case, less than a half of a roll) but I feel like these photos pick up on some of the highlights. For those who want a more comprehensive Photoset, don’t fret, digital is on the way. It just so happened that the analog photos were done before the digital.
This shop needs no introduction but for those looking for a background, I do believe Velo Cult’s San Diego space was one of my first Shop Visits. Check the original photos out here.

Beautiful Bicycle: Ty and His Hufnagel Cross
I got back a few rolls of film from the 2012 NW Rapha Gentlemen’s Race and totally forgot about this photo I took of Ty with his Hufnagel Cross, prior to his roll-out. That bike is so nice.

Portland Is…
… Beautiful. We’ve spent the past few days exploring within the city and out of the city, trekking out to Horsetail Falls and various other trails. We’ve seen many great shops and met some brilliant people. While I’m collecting photos, I figured I’d share a few off a roll of film I just got back from the Hasselblad.
Today a small group is heading out on a century through the country roads and into Hood River. I’ll be away from the computer all day, but will have my 35mm on me, so expect some great photos from our ride. Posts will resume on Wednesday, including some from Hufnagel Cycles!

Seagull Bags
Columbus’ Seagull Bags have grown to be one of the most popular bag makers over the years and while I was in Columbus a few weeks back, I randomly hopped in to check out their facilities. Unfortunately, all I had was my Hasselblad with 6 exposures left on the roll so it’s not what I would consider a full Shop Visit gallery, but it does capture some of the space and faces of Seagull Bags.

Stanridge Speed
Over the past year or so, I’ve become pretty good friends with Adam Eldridge of Stanridge Speed, so it was nice to stop in and see his shop while I was in Columbus visiting Lauren’s family. To call his facilities small and intimate is an understatement. His shop is tucked away inside a community work space. A giant, 8,000sqft warehouse nestled inside a recently renovated park. He has no heat and his walls are made from corrugated metal.
Through the flickering florescent lighting, he mitres, brazes, finishes and paints his bicycle frames before sending them out all over the world. While his Highstreet may be the most popular frame, his passion is falling into cross bikes and road bikes. He likes frames that require problem solving… I documented his facilities the best I could with my 5D and my Hasselblad, which proved to be no easy task. But I feel it really captures the spirit of Stanridge Speed.
