Escape to Santa Catalina Island

Escape to Santa Catalina Island

It’s not every day you’re presented with an opportunity to step out of the routines of daily life and to reconnect with a couple of old friends in a beautiful, fairly isolated environment; and to get to fully experience that place from the saddle of your bicycle. When a couple of my oldest friends, Josh and Alex, invited me on a bikepacking adventure – and asked me to assist with a video they planned to produce about the trip – help with logistics, carry some gear, etc. – I gave an enthusiastic and immediate, “I’m all in.” Josh and Alex had secured a generous grant from Kitsbow to capture our time on camera, in hopes that our experience would inspire and motivate others to get outside, unplug from life a bit, reconnect with old friends, and explore an exciting and accessible environment within a reasonable window of time. What cyclist wouldn’t want to throw their bike in a travel bag, fly down to Los Angeles for a 3 day weekend, and spend the bulk of that time pedaling around on Santa Catalina Island with a duo of old friends?

Not Quite Out of the Woods

This is a very moving moment captured in video…

“I hope this film inspires other parents to provide their kids with experiences of adventure through bikepacking, and cycling in general. And for parents of kids undergoing medical treatment, I hope Eleanor’s smile and positive attitude encourages hope and strength, proving that happiness is found in pushing limits and seeking new experiences.” Adin Maynard, Eleanor’s dad.

Kitsbow’s New Alpha Vest

Remember the Kitsbow Alpha Jacket? It’s still to this day one of my favorite, warmest pieces of winter apparel. That’s due to its adoption of the Polartec® Alpha™ insulation, originally developed for the US military. This civilian application is good news for us, especially this time of year. Kitsbow has taken the ideas behind the Alpha Jacket and just released the Alpha Vest. Available in two colors, and in stock now. Check out more details at Kitsbow.

The Best Flannel EVER is Back in Stock at Kitsbow

I first bought the Kitsbow Icon in 2014 and out of all my apparel, both on and off the bike, it’s become a staple. As soon as the temps drop, it becomes my go-to mountain bike or bike touring jacket. I’ve taken spills, experienced thrills and everything in between with it. It’s a true example of a heritage piece, in a modern world where everything is disposable. Made in the USA from Oregon-made Pendleton wool with Schoeller®-shape 3XDRY abrasion panels and built to last.

My point is, the Kitsbow Icon is the best flannel I’ve ever owned and there’s nothing I’d change about it. Kitsbow agrees, although they do offer new colors each year… The Icon is back in stock at Kitsbow.

EDIT:
These features were added in the V2 Icon:
NEW Increased opening of cuffs to accommodate a watch
NEW Improved coverage of patches
NEW Improved articulation of shoulder vents (and made sure they don’t pooch out)
NEW Added some reflectivity for night safety

Kitsbow’s Front Range Merino Sweatshirt

Kitsbow’s Front Range Merino Sweatshirt

Kitsbow makes high-quality cycling apparel in the US, yet at a price. A $150 merino sweatshirt might seem like a lot of money, but as I’ve found over the years with Kitsbow, it’ll be the best you’ll ever own and will last for years. While not every thing in their catalog is for me, I can spot their new classics a mile away. This Front Range Merino Sweatshirt will be a fall and winter trail staple!

Nicholas’ Bruce Gordon Rock ‘n’ Roll Road

Reportage

Nicholas’ Bruce Gordon Rock ‘n’ Roll Road

Bruce Gordon has been making off-road, drop bar bikes for a long time. Back when he started, there weren’t many options for road bikes that could take fat tires, so Bruce began making his own. Fast forward to modern times and every major bicycle brand has at least one “gravel bike” in their catalog. With the ubiquity of these bikes, very few have the style of a Bruce Gordon Rock n Road frame.

Nicholas‘ bike is a prime example of just how rad these bikes are. He built his with a 1x setup, Paul Mini Motos and it’s ready for shreddin’ as Kyle was witness to as he took Nicholas out on the Local’s Only ride here in LA. Filled with bandit singletrack and secret short-cuts across town, this ride is a good test for not only a rider’s capabilities but a bike’s.
