Scarlet Zeigler: Erie Canal Individual Time Trial

In 2020, 11 year old Scarlet Zeigler set a personal goal for herself to ride 100 miles on her bike in one day. She accomplished that goal in the early spring and then set out riding several tours that year. One of those was on the Erie Canal where she decided to see how fast she could ride it. That year, she rode it in 2 days, 22 hours.

For 2021, Scarlet decided to see if she could beat that time and went back, fully self-supported, and rode from Buffalo to Albany NY on the Erie Canal trail. In November. She was responsible for buying all of her own food, finding water along the route and had to figure out the many detours completely on her own. I (her dad) simply recorded everything with a dated iPhone…

Here is the story….

36 Hours in Kitsbow: Bear With Us

The latest 36 Hours in Kitsbow follows a family looking to get out for a weekend singletrack rip:

“When your mom is an RN in a critical care unit and your dad owns a whitewater rafting company, you might be predisposed to be ready to face anything. Being game to ride 20+ miles of flowy, singletrack riding is baked in, right? Yet, what if you’re only three years old? Bear With Us follows Dave and Katie Crawford to one of the best single track locations in the South with a 3-year-old. It’s not what you would expect!”

36 Hours in Kitsbow: The Mysteries of Saint Anthony

Just minutes north of Harrisburg, Stony Valley is part of the second-largest roadless wilderness tract of land in Pennsylvania. Originally called Saint Anthony’s Wilderness, the land is marked with remnants of an industrial haven from coal and lumbering industries, where more than 2,000+ people lived along the mountains of this beautiful valley in its heyday. After recently moving to the area, a mom and daughter venture out to explore their new backyard, and uncover some of the valley’s hidden gems along the way.

The Bike that Tipped Us Over the Edge: August Bicycles’ Balance Bike

I can’t say that the possibility of a custom balance bike persuaded me personally to have a kid (let’s give hormones that honour), but having been together many years, I feel confident stating that it was in the pro column for Gavin. As I sat on the sofa, snacks resting precariously on my growing stomach, Gavin would wax lyrical about ideas he had for the small person’s first balance bike, with me nodding sagely but honestly, not listening. There were screengrabs, blackboard diagrams and long waffling trains of thought. Then, parts started arriving at the workshop and not for August Bicycles customers.

Resourcefulness and a Community Endeavor: Silver Stallion Bicycle and Coffee Works in Gallup, NM

Resourcefulness and a Community Endeavor: Silver Stallion Bicycle and Coffee Works in Gallup, NM

A while back, we featured the photography of Shaun Marcus and the writing of Jon Yazzie in our Reportage section, documenting the Dzil ta’ah Adventures Navajo Youth Bike-Packrafting Adventure Series. That story took place in Nazlini, AZ, and it served as an introduction to the readers of the Radavist about the Silver Stallion Bicycle and Coffee Works. All last year, the Navajo Nation fought the Covid-19 pandemic, as it spread across the expansive reservation which covers over 27,000 miles of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. This year, with the vaccination efforts pushing forward, I felt like it was finally safe to travel three hours south to Gallup, New Mexico upon invitation to get a first-hand experience of what the Silver Stallion has been up to…

Grew, Grow, Grohens: Flowgroh shreds with 8-year old Charles

With Flowgroh stuck in his home area in Les Vosges, France due to lockdowns, he chose to teach his family friend Charles the ways of MTB. Learning stoppies, schralps and hucks became a school for Charles, and he was a quick learner. So much so, Charles would be awake at 6 am waiting for the next ride.

Alpha Bicycle: Start Em Young

McGovern, Meriwether, and even Spray.Bike had a helping hand in this custom bike for Alpha Bicycle’s Adam Rachubinski:

This project started almost as one of necessity. Bicycle shortages and delays are a matter of fact that don’t care if your daddy owns a bike shop. With the shop’s allocation of kids bikes from our manufacturers barely able to cover a quarter of the demand, I knew I was going to have to get creative. Combine that with the fact that my now 6-year-old twins are still pretty small for their age. They just can’t fit the majority of 20” wheeled bikes that are on the market. At the same time, their small stature and current single speed bikes didn’t stop them from regularly riding 4 or 5 miles a day, often while having to dismount and push up the bigger hills.

Parenting by Bike: A Boy Named Max

Parenting by Bike: A Boy Named Max

You ever cross someone’s path and roll away feeling like they changed something in you forever, simply by existing as they are? I am Katie Sox, a freelance visual media maker, a professional massage therapist, and proponent of platonic love. I ride bikes, see people beyond their costumes, own my awkwardness and giggle a whole bunch, too. I grew up racing BMX and doing ballet then got into mountain biking in my early 20’s. For me, the privilege to ride is of the utmost value.

Ben’s Rivendell Rosco Bubbe Baby Carrier

Reportage

Ben’s Rivendell Rosco Bubbe Baby Carrier

When you become a parent you start to ask the really hard questions, like what kind of amazing bike am I going to build to haul my little kiddo around?  Ben was lucky enough to snag this Rivendell Rosco Bubbe from Alex at Yellow Haus Bicycles when he was clearing out some inventory.  This may look like your average Clem Smith, but nay, this is a Rosco Bubbe experiment. This frame was designed to have a longer top tube to accommodate kid carrier as we see here.  The longer space makes room for the carrier and the rider to fit in the space between the saddle and bars.  This bike is technically Chelsea, Ben’s wife’s rig but it luckily fits them both so they can both take Marcel out for a spin.
