Industry Nine: Torch Classic Mountain Center Lock Hubs

Industry Nine makes amazing hubs. In fact they’re my favorite MTB hub on the market and many would agree that they just got better. The Asheville, NC company just announced the addition of center-lock hubs to their Torch Classic Mountain hubs. As with all i9 products, they come in a variety of colors, axle compatibilities and rear spacing perfect for matching your bike. See more information at Industry Nine.

Labels Out Or In?

Yesterday people got in a little debate about hub label orientation on Chris King hubs. So which way is it?

A few years ago, I asked Chris King and Jay Sycip which “way” the hub label should be facing on a King front hub. I had always heard the rider should be able to read the label and while most manufacturers agree, Chris King wanted the viewer of the bike to see his name.

One way to tell it was intentional: the cone adjustment is on the same side as the rear hub when you place the name facing out. So, technically, yes the hub is in the wrong orientation with the Stinner. Does it matter? No. Especially since the traditional way is facing in.

Mash and Phil Wood

Mash has collaborated with Phil Wood three times now and while the original high flange green hubs were very, very nice these battleship gray low flange models turned out exquisite. These bombproof hubs are 32 hole, fixed / fixed and would look great on a street or a race wheelset.

All-City Cycles: New Sheriff SL Track Hubs

All-City Cycles recently took their popular Sheriff track hubs and re-worked them drastically improving the functionality. All while keeping the original design language. They lightened the axles, removed material at the flanges and topped off the re-design with Japanese manufactured 6902 bearings which roll incredibly fast and smooth while retaining excellent seals for all weather, all-day everyday durability.

The result is a hubset that weighs a mere 432g,198 for the front, and 234 for the rear. This makes it one of the lightest track hubsets in the world, a figure even more impressive when you consider All-City didn’t eliminate the usefulness of a fixed / fixed or fixed / free option as most racing hubs do.

The new Sheriff SL track hubs are available in 28 and 32 hole versions, silver or black, front and rear. See more at All-City Cycles and place an order through your local shop.

Reportage

Cielo and Chris King

Each year, I love watching people’s faces as they enter the Chris King compound and although the metaphor “like a kid in a candy shop” is somewhat dated, it’s application here is quite fitting. I can’t even walk into their booth without picking up at least a headset (purple!). This year at NAHBS, the Portland based frame builders and component manufacturers brought all kinds of eye candy. My favorite project bike was the champagne and purple Sportif Racer but people were tapping the top tubes and squeezing the brakes of the Cross Racer and Overlander (which I totally didn’t get a good photo of).

At this point, you’re probably not even reading the copy anymore, so check out the gallery for more goodness!
