Not a Yeti: Gravel Jesus’ Surly Midnight Special Pro Fro Tribute Bike

The mid of March is usually a time where you think about the upcoming season and what kind of adventures you are going to tackle during springtime. Suddenly, the world is closing down, throwing everyone into the status of the unknown. Leaving us with restless and raving minds. Diving into the world of bikes has always been a great way of escaping reality for me. Let it be physically or virtually – if you don´t have the chance for some saddle time.

I was blessed to have the chance of getting my first taste of ultra-cycling at the Atlas Mountain Race last February. The harsh brutality of the Morrocan rock fields brought up the first ideas for this project. Rocks and smaller stones hitting my frame and rims for hours let me think about how I would repaint my bike after the race.

The Ride Farr Headspace 70mm Stem is a Throwback

Available in late January of 2021, the Ride Farr Headspace 70mm is a throwback to MTB and ATB stems of the ’80s and ’90s but designed for gravel bikes. Why 70mm for a gravel bike? -70mm Extension
-Zero Degree Rise
-8mm Bar Diameter
-Forged Alloy Construction with CNC-Machined Finish
-70mm Clamping Width ( ideal for Drop Handlebars and Flat or Low Riser MTB Handlebars )
-Target Weight : 167g
-MSPR: $95.00

the Fairlight Secan MKii

Radar

the Fairlight Secan MKii

The Secan MKii and Faran MKii sit together as a family of products as they share many of the same design features including tire clearance, tube shaping, and dynamo integration. Both models are extremely versatile and they can cover everything from commuting to self-sufficient touring. Whereas the recently launched Faran MKii is a dedicated off-road tourer, the Secan MKii is an all-capable gravel bike.

The Secan MKii features custom-shaped and butted Renolds tubing: 853 DZB down tube, 853 seat tube, 853 top tube, and a 631 CNC’d oversized head tube. Both the Secan MKii and the Faran MKii utilize 14mm stays.

Think of the Secan as a more robust off-road machine with an oversized head tube, larger tubing, but the same fat tire (68mm) clearance as the Faran. Both have integrated dynamo setups, Fairlight’s signature dropouts/brake mount design, and beautiful paint jobs.

Super Jambo Grom Pre 200

Shit on it, vomit on it, give birth to it… that’s what it’s like organising the Super Jambo Grom Pre 200. An informal 200km gravel event on Ngarigo land, Yaouk Valley, in my home country, Australia. An event that centres all the things we have learnt this year – but also to get loose and have some well-earned fun!

Julien’s 2-11 Cycles MR4 Stainless Steel Gravel Bike

Reportage

Julien’s 2-11 Cycles MR4 Stainless Steel Gravel Bike

As I drive home to Barcelona from a photoshoot in the South of Spain, I dream about the next three days. They will be calm and tranquil while I worked from home. Then, my phone buzzes with a message from Mike, a friend and owner of a bed and breakfast in the Pyrenees Mountains in France. He needs help with a last-minute photoshoot further north in the Basque Country. By last minute, he means tomorrow. No time for a rest. I live for photoshoots. It’s my job. My passion. The lure of home will have to wait, as the car stays packed and continues northward toward France.

A few hours later I am in the French Basque Country, in the town of Saint Jean de la Luz. Mike has brought me to his friend, Julien’s house. It is like the rest of the neighborhood, an etxea, in typical Basque construction with white walls crossed by solid timber beams, covered with a clay terracotta roofs. And there in this iconic French village sits the subject for the day. It’s a fresh, stainless steel 2-11 Cycles. So fresh that it’s barely been out on the road yet.

Cool Breeze in Nutmeg Country: Crust Chapter II

Sometime back in late February the event calendar for Team Brooks Cool Breeze looked like any stadium tour you’d expect for such a glamorous gaggle of athletes.  Grav’l, touring, MTB, hang gliding, street luging…. you name it, we were gonna do it.  Times were fast, relaxing, and exciting, but little did we know that even lifestyle celebrity “athletes” would have little fun in the months to come.
