Brown to El Prieto

Reportage

Brown to El Prieto

When it comes to Los Angeles mountain biking, Brown is one of the most common trails. On the weekend, it’ll be packed with people climbing up the fire road and then bombing down El Prieto, a technical trail, best described as having lots of consequences.

Drop-offs down ravines, sharp turns, protruding rocks, slippery descents. It’s a blast. One morning Moi, Sean, Kyle, Ty and I headed to do a quick 14 miles and 2,000′ before Golden Saddle Cyclery opened for the day.

Tools of the trade:
Yashica T4 / Fuji Neopan 400

Tytanium Life

One person that’s constantly inspiring me in life is Ty from Golden Saddle Cyclery. From crushing the Tour Divide, to riding his fatbike to the top of Baldy (10,000′) in the middle of winter and just general radness. Ty’s always got a camera on him when he seeks out one of his epic rides and I’ve rarely seen any of the photos.

Now he’s got a Tumblr called Tytanium Life. Head over, follow him and stay tuned. I’m sure you’ll see some familiar faces in the mix.

Golden Saddle Cyclery Presents: New Bike Day with Cielo

Shops like Golden Saddle Cyclery do a fair amount of balleur customer builds. Just look back at my Top 10 Beautiful Bicycles of 2013. Most of them were custom machines, built at GSC. Now, the team at Golden Saddle have started ordering Cielo bikes, made by hand in Portland at the Chris King facilities. Starting with Sean’s Cielo Cross Racer!

If you live in Los Angeles and would like to get on a new Cielo, swing through the shop and have a chat (or a beer) with the guys!

Los Angeles You’ve Been Rad!

Los Angeles You’ve Been Rad!

Is the riding in LA the best in the country, or did a group of my close friends make it that way and present me with a great time, every time I’m in town? Who knows. I enjoy riding in LA, be it MTB, road or cross and while I love to ride road here, I’ve only begun to scratch the surface of the real dirty Los Angeles.

Oh and Ty can really boost his Surly Pugsley!

Kyle’s Tokyo Fixed and Death Spray Custom Ono Track

Kyle’s Tokyo Fixed and Death Spray Custom Ono Track

When I found out that London’s Tokyo Fixed Gear reached out to Death Spray Custom to design the paint job on one of their new track frames, dubbed the Ono, I couldn’t wait to see what the outcome would be. It wasn’t until seeing Kyle’s built up in person earlier this year that I could finally geek out on all the little details.

This bike slays and not just in the ride, but the overall presentation. The paint just pops! Kyle’s build ain’t too shabby either. The purple Chris King headset and that AARN track ring really set it off for me. Mixed in with the vintage Shimano post and Cinelli Unicanitor…

Kyle says this is his favorite track bike to date and I can see why! See more photos in the Gallery…

One of Those Golden Saddle Rides

Photos by Kyle Kelley

Yesterday morning, Ty, Kyle, Sean, Moi and myself went out on a MTB ride. On the agenda: up to the top of Brown and down El Preito. I’d never done the full Brown climb before, the last time my rental bike broke down half way up the climb, so I was ready to see what all the fuss was.

We climbed up around 2,000′ from the trail head, soaked in the views of the Angeles Forest and bombed back down the double track to the El Preito entrance. On the way down, Ty found the elusive fatbike air!

El Preito was a lot of fun, especially on the Tallboy LTC. Tight switchbacks, rocky, technical descents down to stream crossings and lots of areas with “consequence” if you’re not paying attention. Basically, yes, it is an exceptional ride and worth doing if you haven’t!

Even though I’ve barely scratched the surface of all that Los Angeles has to offer on a MTB, I can say that what I’ve seen so far has me wanting more!

Check out a few more of Kyle’s photos below!

Team Dream Team and Golden Saddle Cyclery Van Life Tees

Sean from Team Dream has one of the sickest vans and he knows how to live!

“I always wondered what a bike rack on top of my VW van would look like, so my friend James McClung created this reference image for me. The boys at Golden Saddle Cyclery and I liked the drawing so much we decided it would be best to make it a t-shirt for Team Dream & GSC!”

Pick up one of these awesome tees at Golden Saddle Cyclery! My LA homies are killing it!

Sorry to be re-blogging so much of Fyxo’s content these days but he keeps posting photos of some of my best friends, including this lovely lady. Adria is arguably the brains behind Trackosaurus Rex. She’s helped Kyle out with various things over the years, including designing the Golden Saddle Cyclery kits. While I wouldn’t say she has a style, she definitely has a touch and that spills over into all aspects of her life.

Fyxo shot some great photos of Adria and her Landshark cruiser. Check them out here and if you would like to hire Adria for design work, holler here.

Yonder Journal: Ty Hathaway’s Post 2013 Tour Divide Interview

This is one of my favorite people on the planet. He’s inspired me to remember just one thing about cycling: have fun (or at least look rad). Yonder Journal has just posted an interview with Ty, right after he completed the 2013 Tour Divide.

“I was always tired to a certain degree because any day that you ride a mountain bike one hundred and forty miles you’re going to be tired. And if you wake up and do it again, and again, for twenty-three days in a row, you’re going to be tired all the time. So basically I was tired all the time. I feel great now though.”

It’s a hell of a read, so check it out at Yonder Journal!
