Ain’t No Disappointment

If you follow @KyleBKelley and myself on Instagram, these photos should come as no surprise. Tuesday was my last full day in LA and I wanted to do a ride I’ve never done before. But we wanted to take one of the shop helpers, Christian with us, so where would we go?

We began doing Mt. Wilson: 18 miles of climbing and 4,500′ of elevation, which is a piece of cake. Then, we left Christian to nap for an hour at Redbox and headed up Mt. Disappointment, with its rumored top pitches of over 20%. A would be easy feat for my Bishop road with its Austin-hill gearing (34×28) but I was on Ty’s Hufnagel with a granny gear of 38×25. I.e. it hurt like hell.

Even Kyle, who’s a mountain goat of sorts admitted to almost getting off his bike. 3 miles, 1,200′ later and we were at the top and on this one, the views were breathtaking.

Our day totalled around 65 miles and over 7,200′ of climbing. While Kyle doesn’t like to get hung up on distance and elevation, I like to throw it in there not to brag but to show that riding is about having fun with your friends, even while you’re all in pain!

See more Instagram pics from our ride here and 35mm are on the way.

I consider Los Angeles my vacation city. When I come here, I rarely take photos and mostly just kick around GSC, waiting for either an after work or a pre-work ride. Yesterday Kyle and I took off to Griffith Park for some off-road, trail poaching. I’ve never taken this particular route and as the sun set over the hills, it proved to be quite the day-ender. It ended up being about 17 miles and 1,700′ of climbing with about 50% on dirt. Not bad. Oh and thanks to Ty for letting me ride his Hufnagel!

Golden Saddle Vol. 1

The guys at GSC may front like they’re strictly into CCR and Neil Young but deep down, they’re metal heads.

“We were once sitting here on a Tuesday evening and one of our friends turned to us and said, “I’d love to have a Golden Saddle Cyclery shirt but it would have to be in the style of the Black Sabbath Vol.4 album cover.” We sat there scratching our heads, trying to figure out where that came from and if he was serious. A few days later we decided to make this a reality and now you can be the master of this reality. Come in and swoop before they’re all gone!”

You can only pick these rad shirts up at Golden Saddle Cyclery, so head in and swoop!

Now something you might not know about Kyle is that below those Birkenstocks lies a doom-metal head, as evident here by his latest video for GSC and Moth Attack:

“I needed a travel bike but didn’t have the money for a custom frame. So Megan at Moth Attack just put S&S Couplers on my FBM Sword.”

Fucking Electric Wizard!

Golden Saddle Cyclery Grand Prix

I like good vibes, track bikes and races, which about sums up this video from the Golden Saddle Cyclery Grand Prix at Encino Velodrome:

“Golden Saddle Cyclery hosted an amazing day of races to raise funds for the Encino Velodrome. The races consisted of a 3 category Omnium as well as a separate sprint race. Aside from racing, the highlight would have to be the camaraderie and the amazing food prepared by Todd of Burrito Project fame. Golden Saddle would like to thank the racers, spectators and all of our sponsors who donated prizes to help keep this amazing facility open. A special Thank You goes out to Keiron, of Ride The Black Line, for throwing this great event and allowing us to participate. Make sure to make it out to the rest of the summer series going on through out the months of July and August.

Neil’s Cannondale Commuter

Reportage

Neil’s Cannondale Commuter

When Neil walked through the doors of GSC one afternoon with this bike, I couldn’t help but be intrigued. There were so many little details that drew me to scope it out. It had a substantially higher bottom-bracket than you’d normally see on a MTB, especially a Cannondale. There was a Death Spray Custom sticker on the downtube, and a rare one at that. And it was covered with team sponsorship logos.

While some would say it’s not a MTB if there are road tires on it, I would disagree. It’s the frame and the frame’s geometry that decide the nomenclature and this is most definitely a mountain bike, albeit with its flip flops on…

Recent Roll: Get Rad – California Edition

I don’t think I’ll ever want to go on a “training ride”. I have way more fun goofing off and taking photos on my ride bike than I ever would “smoking people” up a mountain. Unless there’s green involved… Both of these photos were taken on rides in Cali, expect their respective Photosets shortly. I love the one of Ty doing a wheelie up Mt. Wilson. Although, Woody clearing the chain is pretty impressive too.

Kyle’s Gilmour Track Bike

Reportage

Kyle’s Gilmour Track Bike

As someone who only rides bikes that were made in the States, Kyle‘s collection of steeds is quite impressive. Calfee road bike, Riv Saluki, S&M BMX, FBM Sword, Santa Cruz Stigmata cross and this Andy Gilmour track bike. When he picked this up from Anthony at Velo Cult, the allure of brakes and bottle cages took over. When all you do is climb on your track bike, hoods are the best thing you could ask for. The 44:17 gearing is ideal for the hilly rides of Los Angeles and tackling Griffith Park with ease… and the Campagnolo C-Record Pista group is just an added bonus.

Andy’s Signal Commuter

Reportage

Andy’s Signal Commuter

Seeing a show bike in a booth, at a convention center is one thing but bumping into it on the street is another treat. While I was in LA, I met Andy, the owner of this beautiful robin’s egg blue Signal Cycles commuter. I had seen this bike before, at the 2012 NAHBS but being able to actually take it for a spin around the block, as I looked for a photo spot, was an honor. It really did ride like a dream and it’s been everything Andy asked for, and more.
