This is by no means a recent photograph. It’s from a ride I did in California with the Giro New Road team. Highway 128 snakes its way through the Navarro River Redwoods State Park and when the road aligns with the setting sun, you get these great slivers of light coming through the trees.
It’s been too long since I’ve been in California. After two months, I’m jonesin’.

Waiting for that “magic minute” when the light is perfect takes patience. As illustrated by the photo above, of a rider in the Santa Cruz mountains, Vernor has plenty of patience. He just posted a few photos from the 2013 Giro Catalog at his portfolio site, go have a look!
Man, I am so bummed I missed the Giro New Road launch party at Golden Saddle Cyclery in LA last Thursday night. Good thing Ace was on hand to shoot photos of the happenings. Check out his full set here. The New Road line is slated for a spring 2013 launch. I can’t wait to review a few of these pieces.

Let me just preface this post by saying I wish I could show you more photos from the Giro New Road photo shoot. Even getting clearance for posting up these took a little bit of eye-batting and begging. But man, am I ever glad I got to share them.
Day 03 began as Ty, Jordan and I took off for the hills adjacent to our ranch. Super steep gravel climbs and windy singletrack was no challenge for Ty and Jordan as the sunlight broke through the trees. They just flowed through the rocky gravel as videographers and photographers tried to capture the essence of New Road. Later on, the afternoon was spent out on HWY 1 at the mouth of the Navarro River. Climbing up and down the hills, before grabbing lunch, and finally dinner.
Some of the photos shown here give you an idea of what Giro is going for in the New Road. But keep in mind, the details that make this line different from any other will be under wraps for now. Till then, enjoy these photos and don’t miss Ty’s crossie wall ride sequence!
I like bikes and people that were born to get dirty. Riding steel on and off road with friends, both close and new is a great way to bide your afternoons in Northern California. I got to spend a lot of saddle time with these three bikes, all of which I’ll be posting up this week, so stay tuned.
I’m heading back to Austin, where I’ll barely have time to process before heading back out to NYC, then Philly, Pittsburgh and Portland. What a whirlwind month it’s gonna be!

We started our day at a reasonable hour and after breakfast, the team got an intro to Giro‘s new cycling apparel line, the New Road. I can’t say a whole lot about it but what I will say is this is far from “commuter wear” and a completely different approach to your typical road wear. The most appealing aspect of the line is that it’s all made in the USA.
Our day began leaving the ranch where we’re staying, down a gravel road and out, along the 128 to the 1. At mile 45, we stopped for lunch and to my surprise, had only climbed around 1,000’. Then, jokingly Mark said “oh, there’s a climb”, a Cat 2 trek awaited us off the 1 and it hurt but the 1,000′ descent in 3 miles was exhilarating. At mile 70, we tacked in around 5,000′. Once back at the ranch, we soaked in the waining sunlight, drank some beer and sat in the hot tub, ready to tackle another day on the bike…
Expect a little more riding photos tomorrow, as well as some more teaser shots of the New Road line.
A few months ago, the people from Giro let me take a look at a new clothing line they’re working on. It’s not race wear and far from commuter wear, something their dubbing the New Road line. To test out some pieces, they’ve flown a few people (myself included) to ride in the Northern California hills and dirt roads.
It’s been a while since I’ve been up in this neck of the woods and I almost forgot how beautiful it is. Almost. So don’t expect a ton of posts from me, the wifi is spotty and there are roads and trails to ride… But you can follow me on Instagram ( JohnProlly ) for more frequent photos.

Speaking of Giro, Vernor shot most of their 2013 catalog’s photos. Just one more reason to try to scoop one up at Interbike.
Now that’s what I’m talking about. If you’re going to do high visibility, go with a product(s) people will wear. For Fall 2012, Giro announced new high visibility models in their popular road and dirt shoes, along with the classic cycling shoe, the Empire. See all the models at Giro.
Giro‘s newest helmet design looks like the cross between a TT helmet and a road helmet. That’s exactly what the Air Attack helmet is. Read up:
“Giro, the cycling world’s design leader since 1985, announced today the Air AttackTM, defining the next generation of cycling helmets. With a systematic approach to design and wind tunnel–tested performance, the Air AttackTM offers reduced aerodynamic drag, light weight and tremendous cooling power. Taken together, these factors can help riders to use their power more efficiently, creating what Giro calls “Free Speed”. The Air Attack will be available in two versions – including one with a magnetically-anchored optical shield, with MSRP of $200 USD and $240 USD respectively. The helmet will be available in Spring 2013.”

Giro will be rolling out a series of these videos to promote their Reverb helmets this year, beginning with this profile on artist Chris McNally:
“Chris McNally is a San Francisco-based artist who fell in love with bicycles and art at an early age. As an illustrator, the need to get out for a ride has always been a part of Chris’ creative process, even if the ride is just across town to his studio. In this first session we ride along with Chris on the streets of San Francisco, from his home in the Richmond to his studio in the outer Mission district, as he talks about how important the ride is to his life and work.”
I just got in from the 2012 Red Hook Crit Dinner Celebration and I’m a little drunk, very tired and anxious for what tomorrow night will bring. The general vibe at this year’s dinner was quite intimate, drawing in a small crowd of racers, media, supporters and NYC locals. A dinner was served, drinks were poured and I got to see some familiar faces. Cinelli unveiled the 2012 Red Hook Crit Vigorelli, Giro displayed their prizes and other brands showed off their contributions. It was a great night.
