Dain from Giro was the key player in the Easton Dream Bike give-aways and now, he’s put together one of his own. Being good friends with Todd from Black Cat and a resident of sunny Santa Cruz, he knew where to go with his idea: a carbon and steel constructed road bike.

Last year was a bad year for Jon from Skratch Labs. Not related to the company, which grew exponentially since the last year’s Tour of California. No, 2013 was a bad year for Jon personally.
First, he and his wife were in the Boston Marathon bombing, then he got hit by a car in July coming down Boulder canyon, leaving his MCL torn and surgeries followed, unable to ride for a while. Two life-threatening events that gave him some perspective.
As a “life reward”, post-accident, Jon contacted Kevin at Mosaic to build a custom titanium RT-1 road with ENVE and Ultegra Di2. The inverted 2013 serves as a reminder and motivator to Jon as he pedals his way into recovery.
Right now, this bike is setup to accomodate his injuries. The saddle is slightly tilted back and the steerer remains uncut, to make the riding position a little more upright. Jon’s intentions are to slowly progress back to his normal riding position, but with all things, it will take time.
Time that Jon’s more than happy to spend riding this machine, like to the top of Rock Store during the final stage of the Amgen Tour of California, where I had, literally 5 minutes to shoot this bike!
I wish the best to Jon, his family and Skratch in 2014. Thanks to Mosaic for being so kind to him as well. See you guys in Boulder!

Design fads come and go in cycling, but one thing’s for sure: camo ain’t going anywhere.
Santa Cruz is a city that never disappoints. No matter what the occasion, I have a blast riding my bike. So when Giro invited me along to their Santa Cruz Effect media event, I gladly accepted.
Even though we were on a pretty tight schedule, we had two days of riding bikes in the woods and coastal roads of NorCal to look forward to. That meant we were to expect a lot of temperature fluctuations throughout the day, the perfect climate for merino wool.
The group included men and women, from all over the world, all of which were related to the cycling industry in some way. We had some locals with us, including Todd from Black Cat, Jeff Traugott, Jake from Steel Wül, along with a few Giro employees. Those dudes put on one hell of a ride, taking us through some great roads and down some incredibly fun (i.e. sketchy) descents.

Today we went on an insanely fun ride from Giro’s HQ through Mount Charlie, Highway 236 and now, we’re in cabins on the coast where we’re staying the night… As always, there’s more to come but for now, here’s a banana slug that enjoys Black Cat fillet brazed stems.

After the first year of Giro’s New Road line, a call was heard from the masses. Women wanted in on the line. Giro wanted it to be good though and rather than simply altering the current men’s lineup to fit women, they hired a female clothing designer and started from scratch.
For the 2014 Women’s New Road photoshoot, Giro picked a group of women ranging from a US National CX Champ, to a leader in advocacy and other figures in the industry. Their intent was to show a range of body types, personalities and styles to convey authenticity to women, and fits many styles. A female photographer, Michael Crook also shot the entire lookbook.
For the 2014 men’s line, not much changed as the classic pieces were established in the first season. However, the outerwear got a few new pieces including a wind vest and jacket, along with more layering options for brisk morning rides. All men’s photos were taken by Chris Milliman.
The 2014 Giro New Road line contains both casual and performance-minded pieces, for men and women, along with their California Collection: garments made by hand in California.

Super Bowl Weekend. It’s an excuse for people to drink, eat and yell at the television while a bunch of men in spandex chase a ball around a field. Personally, it’s not my thing and luckily, not my friends’ thing either. So rather than spend the weekend indoors, myself, some friends and Beat the Clock Cycling decided to take advantage of the vacant Texas parks and plan a ride.
Well, I planned the ride. 100 miles, over half of it was dirt. I did one of the roads on the last Yonder Journal Brovet and I wanted to explore the area even more. We’d leave from Inks Lake and take a series of back-country, private roads and kick in Willow City’s popular loop before heading back to camp. Water? Food? None. We had to pack it all in. Most rode cross bikes or light tourers, with bags for food. There was maybe one stop along the way.
Because I had to drop Lauren off at the airport that Friday morning, I drove with two others. The rest either drove out that night after work or rode the 75 miles from Austin, fully loaded.
Since we wanted to convey only the chillest of riding paces and as a protest to the Super Bowl, most of us left the lycra at home. Giro was kind enough to supply some New Road apparel, shoes and helmets. I brought the bourbon. Spencer brought a dull hatchet and we were all stoked.

I really have to commend Giro on the Spring 2014 New Road Women’s line. When I first saw it at Eurobike, it really impressed me. Not only did they keep a similar style as the men’s line with the same colors and silhouettes, but they made garments specifically for women. Holler Jen!
Here are two videos from the Spring 2014 lookbook shoot, one of which is an interview with Kelli Samuelson on cycling apparel for women. After all the talk I heard from the female consumer market when the men’s first season dropped, I hope it’s received well. They really went all in on this line.

Yesterday I was wearing my first-edition Giro Empire lace up road shoes. Ever since I first put those shoes on, I couldn’t get over how comfortable they were, right out of the box. There was virtually no break-in period.
Now they’re the only road shoes I wear. I’ve found that the laces actually allow for a lot more wiggle room and stretch than traditional buckles or velcro, meaning I don’t need to adjust them at all once they’re on my feet. Also, the laces have never come out of the loops, which is a concern of many people.
My only qualm with the first edition Empires is that I don’t always want to wear patent leather, which is why I love the new offerings (not pictured: white, because I hate white shoes). The all matte black, black and fluoro orange / yellow look amazing.
