I almost don’t want to show you these, because as you might have guessed, they were a gift to “friends and family” of Bike Mag. Ever since architecture school, where I explored WWI razzle dazzle camouflage and its potential for a building’s façade I fell in love with the seemingly random pattern language. Since then I’ve enjoyed seeing it appear literally all over pop culture and now, the cycling industry.

My favorite dirt shoes are the Empire VR90s and while I’ll always default on black, these shoes are a piece of art. I’m honored to own a pair so to the crew at Giro and Bike Mag, thanks for making them happen! Check out more photos below.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever looked more forward to a cycling event as Grinduro. The format is sure to bring about competition, yet I doubt many people will be taking it seriously. Personally, I’m gonna be in party ride mode. Especially after these next few weeks!

When Giro launched their New Road apparel line a few years back, they brought in their take on what road cycling wear could become and now, their Chrono Collection addresses the other side to that coin for apparel.

The Chrono collection was launched yesterday and I’ve been reading up on it at their site. My take-away here: the Chrono Collection offers affordable and functional pieces for men and women but the most significant designed piece is the Chrono Expert Halter Bib for women. That’s innovative design.

Last year at the Tour, Giro unveiled the SYNTHE helmet. A lightweight, aerodynamic, well-ventilated helmet with a clean, minimal profile. This year, the SYNTHE got safer with MIPS, or multi-directional impact protection system. MIPS is the by-product of the science behind safety, which in my opinion is more important than any speed or aerodynamic efficiency testing you’ll read online. Another factor to consider is looks. There are colors to match your desired look, from black to fluorescent. The SNYTHE looks good, which will make you want to actually wear your helmet more.

Hopefully by now you’ve heard of Grinduro, Giro’s two-day event in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Part gravel grinder, part enduro and all fun. Co-sponsored by SRAM, all proceeds from the event will benefit the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship. Thanks to Ray Barbee and Mike Watt, the October 10th event just got a lot more rockin’…

In addition to the music and the racing, Grinduro will feature displays of art and hand-built bicycles, and excellent food from former Clyde Common chef Chris DiMinno of Gourmet Century fame. Featured builders include Black Cat, Blue Collar Bikes, Caletti, Falconer, Retrotec, Steve Rex, Soulcraft and others. There will also be displays of handmade creations from Paul Component Engineering, White Industries, Strawfoot and Traugott Guitars alongside art from Geoff McFetridge and others.

Registration is open now and is $200 for the weekend including race entry, camping, music and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday. The concerts and bike/art expo will be available to general admission on Saturday evening for $5/person.
