Manual for Speed Does ‘Cross

Technically, they did cross at the of last season with the Worlds being in Kentucky. For this year, however, Manual for Speed will be covering the 2013 season in its entirety and you can head over to see their introductory first post, featuring the muddy, snowy shitshow that was the UCI Worlds.

See more at Manual for Speed.

Best of luck to everyone racing this weekend!

Locals Only Ride in Los Angeles

Reportage

Locals Only Ride in Los Angeles

Locals Only isn’t about exclusivity when used in this context, because truth be told, each time I’ve been on this ride, there are usually more out of towners than locals. It’s more of a way that Kyle and Ty like to throw visitors into the proverbial fire. The first time I did this ride, it was at night, in the rain, during goat head season and with no lights. It sucked. This time, it was rad. I won’t post the route (locals only, breh), but we did about 25 miles and 3,000′.

Beat the Clock Cycling Urbocross Week 02

These days, I can never decide if I want to race, or shoot photos at events like this. Last night’s Cycleast and Beat the Clock Cycling Urbocross looked so rad. Half singletrack and half bike path sprinting seemed like a 50/50 fun to pain ratio for me. I can eat up dirt just fine but I don’t have the fitness for long, paved straight aways. On a whim, after showing up in plain clothes, I entered the race and was doing fine sitting in second until I got a pinch flat. So it goes. At least I got to take a few more photos!

This set is weird. Half of it is of a local racer’s Black Cat SSCX and the other, pre, mid and post race photos. Either way, it’s a bit of radness everyone can enjoy. Check out more in the Gallery! Many thanks to Cycleast and Beat the Clock for putting on this event. See ya next week…

Two Days at Gloucester

My friend Drew from NYC is healing up before he can race this season, so rather than taking his bike to Gloucester, he took his camera. While this was clearly work for him, it appears he had fun making it, so we could have fun watching it. Nicely done man!

With the increase in popularity of ‘cross in America, more and more photographers are making it out to their local races. Today I came across a few photosets worth the share. The first being from Lake Sammish in Seattle, shot by Andy Bokanev and the second being Rick Anderson’s coverage in Chicago. If you know of a local photographer, or maybe you’re lens savvy yourself, send your photos over and I’ll do my best to share them come Monday!

Manual for Speed at 2013 Cross Vegas Men Elite

Reportage

Manual for Speed at 2013 Cross Vegas Men Elite

Year after year, the cycling industry flocks to Las Vegas, Nevada, a desert town known for debauchery, gambling and late night shenanigans. Like moths to the flame, people crowd the ailes of Interbike to see the latest technology in cycling, but during the frenzy-filled first day, there’s one thing on everyone’s mind: Cross Vegas.

The past two years have been huge and this year, when Sven Nys was announced in the roster, the heat was on… Since I couldn’t stay for the Men Elite race (see results here), I asked my good friends at Manual for Speed to submit a Guest Gallery. You know those guys right? They’re taking cycling by storm with their unique perspective on the sport.

This year, Manual for Speed will be covering ‘cross extensively (as they do) and what better way to start off the season than with a little Cross Vegas? Check out more in the Gallery and keep your eyes glued to Manual for Speed this ‘cross season!

Cross Vegas Singlespeed

Reportage

Cross Vegas Singlespeed

Hey, #CrossIsHere. Each year, Cross Vegas represents the kick-off for cyclocross racing in the States. Everyone’s stoked, racing new bikes, on freshly trained legs and ready to stare down those beer hand ups (or get beer thrown in their faces). This year, I did things a little differently, focusing more on the singlespeed race and rider / bike portraits. I’ve got more coming from the other races, but for now, enjoy!

Hey ATMO, I really, really admire what you’re doing with your cyclocross team. You’ve taken a signature livery and put it aside to allow some graphic auteurs to re-interpret and re-package it. That takes a lot of confidence and it couldn’t have been easy. But as I’m sure you know, from living a long life as a framebuilder and race sponsor that nothing meaningful is easy.

This is me, telling you that you’re doing it and doing it well.

Fulton Brewery Racing Team All City Nature Boy Cross

Reportage

Fulton Brewery Racing Team All City Nature Boy Cross

The Fulton Brewery Racing Team is a Minneapolis-based cross team that All-City sponsors and this year, Jeff decided to do something extra special for them. He took a batch of Nature Boy Zonas (before they all sold out) and painted them in the Fulton Brewery livery. That means they fly under the green, black and white colors (and get discounted beer). Win / win.

Then, Jeff did something very un-Jeff. He put a carbon fork on a bike that wasn’t engineered for one. Oh noes! Joking aside, Jeff and I always get into this debate. Personally, I think it looks rad! The Whisky Parts No7 forks are something to desire, especially when painted to match the rest of the bike.

I love what All-City is doing with the Fulton Brewery Racing Team and it makes me want to drink a Lonely Blonde right now. Check out more photos in the Gallery, including a shot of the new All-City Crossing Guard and rings.

45Nrth’s FASTERKATT #CrossIsComing

45Nrth brings the doom and gloom for their new “commuting and cross” shoe, the FASTERKATT, which provide comfort at 25 degrees. Check out more specs on the FASTERKATT here. After commuting by bike every winter day in NYC for the last four years I lived there, I would have loved these shoes, rather than Gore Bike Wear slip covers over my normal SPDs.

Mission Workshop: The Ends – Video Trailer

Here’s a video trailer promoting a series of webisodes that Mission Workshop is working on with the Werehaus, showcasing our bike tour in China:

“Setting out from Shanghai, John Watson and Mission Workshop began their cycling tour of China’s Yangtze River Delta. Using both film and digital formats, Watson photographed the surroundings and encounters with the local community. Led by their friends from Factory Five, they headed into a frenetic network of massive residential complexes, large industrial parks, and super highways. At first glance, the route seemed straightforward, however, the reality of the 1,000km trip was far more intense than anyone expected.”

Keep on top of The Ends at Mission Workshop and please come to the opening party, let’s hang out!
