There are some weird, strange places on the internet and Manual for Speed is one of them. Not many media outlets can tackle Las Vegas into submission, but these two put out a damn good effort. See the Las Vegas Red Carpet post and the Cross Vegas coverage at Manual for Speed.

Cross Vegas is the official kick-off for American cyclocross season, in my opinion anyway. It’s raucous, rowdy and best of all, FUN! The highlight of the evening for me is the Wheelers and Dealers event where industry reps and shop peeps battle head to head for a place on the podium next to Craig Etheridge – who wins every year.
The crowd loves it. Everyone’s doing handups, toss ups, spraying beer, hecking and this year, like it does every year, it carried on well into the UCI race. This year’s event drew big names like Lars van der Haar and Sven Nys – maybe you’ve heard of them? At any rate, these pros had an introduction to the party time that is Cross Vegas and yes, things got out of hand.
Thanks to everyone who hung out and made the evening an enjoyable one!
Hopefully I can track down Katie before cross vegas to shoot this bike because it looks great. Thanks to Adam from Stanridge for sending this one over…

The grass is good and dead here in Austin. That means cyclocross season is nigh. Jonathan recently relocated from Omaha to Austin, at the height of the summer heat, to replace the wrench of my buddy Chris at Mellow Johnny’s.
Even though it’s well over 100 degrees here, Jonathan’s Falconer cross bike scorches the ground it traverses. This thing is molten lava and the paint even matches the dried, dead grass. I think this might be one of my favorite bikes I’ve shot this year.
Accent points are the Chris King Mango bits, orange PAUL Minimoto brakes and a nice sparkle clear coat. My favorite detail however are the seat stays and Solid’s tapered head tube to match the ENVE fork.
I can’t wait to see this thing at the races this season!
Veneration of Delinquency or a Brief Evening of Speed

The cross bike, as many readers of this site have come to find, is an extremely flexible riding platform. Equip it with 23s and you are off racing crits, go the other way you are blasting trails, they dress up nicely as touring bikes, they are perfect “gravel grinders” –whatever that means, and here in the pacific northwest they are the go to model for a winter training bike, the ample brake clearance allowing full fenders to be easily installed…
This bike has single-handedly upped the game for All-City Cycles in my opinion. You get everything the Nature Boy had, plus disc brakes, a Whisky fork, Anna’s fancy dropout design and Reynolds 853. All that for $1,200 frameset or $2,250 complete. Available in November of this year.

Look, helmets are cool and all – they do save your life – but I still can’t get over how rad Giro’s new Empire VR90 shoes look. It’s like someone plucked my ideal MTB shoe from my brain and hit the print button.

Gevenalle, formally Retroshift, has just completed their drivetrain package with two new ‘cross derailleurs. Simplicity is the name of the game and Gevenalle’s approach to rear mech. shifting in cyclocross is the BURD = Blatantly Upgraded Rebranded Derailleur.
“We start with a tough, durable no nonsense unit from Microshift that woks as well as any, but then set about making it better. Derailleur is disassembled and chain tension spring is adjusted to provide 25% more force. This provides a big advantage in keeping the chain planted on your chaining when the course gets rough or mud build up might lift another bikes chain off the chainring. Next we pack the units with good quality grease from the folks at Phil Wood and then we replace the pulleys.”

German companies VANDEYK and Crema Cycles teamed up to design, develop and deploy a new range of ‘cross bikes simply dubbed the VDX. These Columbus Spirit and True Temper Platinum OX come in a full size run with a canti or disc option and personally, look really bad ass.

The 2014 All City Championship Weekend: Bandit Cross

This was part one of three among the events for this year’s All City Championships.
At 6:30 pm racers gathered at a place called Hobo Camp in west Minneapolis.
Jeff Frane from All-City and his race team, Fulton Racing put together a great course ranging from a little mud section, spiraling pedestrian ramps, rail road track barriers, single track leading into a pump track section and a gnarly climb up. I’m calling it a climb up instead of a run up because racers literally had to climb up a mountain of dirt every lap!
At the end, Bandit Cross favorites Fulton racing took a podium sweep in both gender categories.
