Ryan’s Favorite Products of 2023

Over the years I’ve slowly tinkered with my touring setup to really nail down which pieces of kit work best for the type of riding I do and where I’m heading next.  I’m always looking for new products that are versatile in terms of the climate and terrain they can be used on, and most importantly I want them to last, as this stuff can be difficult to replace while on the road.  Most of the items on this list are things I’ve started to use over the last year or two, but there are also a couple of items that have been a staple of my setup for the last 7 years.

With the holidays approaching we like to spend some time looking back at 2021 and give some of our favorite products a shout-out. In this post, we look at John’s personal favorite products of the year. Some are cycling-related, others are just solid staples John’s enjoyed using this year, so let’s get to it!

Adidas’ New Gravel Shoes

Adidas’ New Gravel Shoes

Since acquiring Five Ten a few years ago, Adidas has been ramping up its cycling catalog. We saw the brands first big move with the Velosamba shoes and now with their new, high-cuff gravel shoes. These SPD shoes contain recycled material (50% of upper is recycled content), offer a sock-like snug fit, are lightweight and stiff, and because we always end up on a hike a bike, the sole is made from a durable and grippy material. FiveTen Announces New Footwear Made from Recycled Parley Ocean Plastic

Jumping onto the movement in the outdoor industry to use recycled ocean plastic in apparel, FiveTen just announced their new footwear lineup made from recycled Parley Ocean Plastic with an impressive 50% of the upper being made from textile of which 75% is Primeblue yarn. Both the Freerider and Freerider Pro shoe models for men and women are made from this innovative material. See more at FiveTen.

Adidas’ New Velosamba Marks a Return to the Classic Adidas Cycling Shoe

We all remember the fabled Eddy Merckx Adidas cycling shoes. Perhaps you’ve owned a pair or maybe you’ve seen them in a shop, or on this very website back in the day. When the Eddy Merckx editions came out, traditional pedals and toe clips were the ideal foot retention system. We’ve come a long way with clipless designs since, which is why the new Velosamba cycling shoes utilize an SPD design, perfect for commuting. Adidas took this pedigree and meshed it with the classic Samba silhouette in an online-exclusive model, in four UK colors (the US market gets one color – black).

The Velosamba retails for $120. Head to Adidas for all the details…

Adidas Returns to Cycling With “the Road” Shoes and More

While Adidas’ entire cycling lineup looks exceptionally well, the real standout from the brand’s full-fledged return to cycling apparel is ‘the Road’ shoes. Those fans of the ’70s and ’80s Adidas cycling shoes will remember how sleek and minimal those shoes were. The Road shoes feature three reflective stripes, lace closure, a seamless upper, and use three-bolt cleats patterns. These shoes will retail for £130 when they’re in stock and unfortunately, they’re only available in the UK…

Adidas Unveils Extensive Cycling Collection

Footwear giant Adidas has resurrected its cycling program with an full line spanning road to mountain. Everything from jackets, to bibs, tights and jerseys can now be ordered through select retailers… In Europe.

For US-customers, we can check out the entire collection in the embedded program or browse the catalog on the Adidas Cycling website. Personally, I think it’s an impressive launch and would like to hope that some of it makes its way Stateside.

Merckx Mondays

Merckx Mondays

A few years back, I posted about these shoes, which I still have in my possession (obviously). While they’re no longer NOS – after a few rides on the track bike – they are in still pristine condition. As a matter of face, I have all three of these shoes in the “Related” sidebar, all sitting in my office now after living in storage containers for years. I’m not sure what sparked this particular Merckx Mondays, other than seeing Golden Saddle Cyclery using their Merckx Adidas shoe box to hold limes when I was in LA last week…

Nothing wrong with that!

Bombtrack for Adidas: Street Crew Bags and Track Bike

This is by no means the first time a sneaker and bicycle company have worked together on a project, although I do think this capsule collection looks cohesive and clean. Bombtrack was approached by Adidas to design and produce 50 track bikes to coincide with the forthcoming Adidas Street Crew bag line.

These bikes can only be seen in a selected 32 Adidas Flagship Stores throughout Europe and Asia.
