John Watson picks up this series we began with Ryan Wilson during the pandemic. Consider this a shout out to our favorite small businesses in the cycling industry. Here are some of John’s personal picks.
Small businesses are the foundation of the outdoor industry and many have been seriously impacted by the pandemic over the last couple of months. While money is understandably tight for a significant portion of people, if you do have the means and are dreaming up your next bike trip or local ride, I wanted to offer up a few suggestions for gear that I believe is worthy of investing in from some of my favorite small businesses in the industry.
… one is available through your local bike shop and the other is a little more rare. Both are at Golden Saddle Cyclery in Los Angeles. I’m jealous of that Eisentraut buckle, but that Salsa Rattler Buckle might be the coolest thing I’ve seen in recent months.
Everyone was wondering what was up with those crazy All-City Cycles bandanas from the Crash Nationals coverage – where’d that go, anyway? Well, All-City finally added these new Team Dream Bicycling Team collaboration – collabro – bandanas to their stock, so head to your local deal for ordering and to the All-City product page for more information.
Detroit’s Shinola has produced a line of watches for one of the oldest outdoors companies in the US. Filson continues to manufacture almost all of their apparel in the USA, so it would make sense that they would join forces with Shinola, who assembles all their watches at their Detroit facility. These watches look amazing. Dark earth tones like olive drab and many references to classic timepieces really go a long way for the Shinola aesthetic.
While these watches shouldn’t hold the Made in USA label Filson has proclaimed, it’s still a step in the right direction for the United States and domestic production.

You might remember this brand from a few years back. Retired Goods started off as Retired Belts, old bicycle tires that were shredded and made into belts. Now the line has grown into dog leashes and blanket roll carriers. Head over to Retired Goods to see more!
… to the stem cap world, anyway. Here’s that photo from the current issue of Bicycling, featuring the Radavist Raidō Rune cap and many others you’ll recognize.

So… what makes a bike pump worth $450? NPR dives into the story on how Silca moved their production to Indianapolis. Listen to the story at NPR and yes, I totally bought one. Ok, I lied, I put it on my credit card.
Is it really worth it? I mean, it’s a pump, but it’s a damn nice pump and it looks great holding down the tiles in my office. Functionality considered, it’s got an impressive amount of machining, akin to a luxury sportswatch and if it means Silca might one day make a $100 USA-made floor pump, I’m all for supporting this industry.

As both a “journalist” and a consumer, I get really excited when I see something new coming from a brand, especially one with a history like Blackburn. In recent months, I’ve gotten to know the brand a bit better, both through their Meet the Rangers program and from a product perspective. I’ve seen a few of their forthcoming products, many of which I think you’ll be stoked on but before those roll out, I thought you’d appreciate a little Q&A with the brand.

So, the other day, I’m thinking I need to buy a Garmin mount for my new Argonaut, but I didn’t want a plastic one. After seeing the K-Edge mounts all over, but having never owned one, I thought, what the hell, a balleur mount for a balleur bike.
