Review: All-City Nature Boy Cross Bike

When I first saw the All-City Nature Boy last year, I got all kindsa excited. For a while now, I’ve been looking for a good single-speed cross bike. All I want are canti brakes, fender mounts and clearance for big tires. Sure, there are other options out there but small and simple details make the bike.

Check out more photos and more of my review below.

Saturday was a busy busy day. Jon from Atlanta came into town for the weekend and Tony Fast came up from Philly. All Jon wanted to do was race at the track all weekend and Tony just wanted to ride. With the Yowelli jam going on, we headed out early in the morning to catch some of the late-summer sun. Guys were going big, as you can see!

Locked Up: Riggio Americana Pista

Under the Beautiful Bicycles category, I’m going to start documenting all the beautiful bikes I come across on the street in a label called “Locked Up”. Today while getting coffee at Gimme I came across this Riggio Americana SL Pista. Riggio bicycles were made by Viner in Italy in the 70’s and 80’s. The Americana Pista model was a Columbus SL main triangle and lower-end Columbus steal rear triangle (most likely Cromor). Check out some more detailed photos below.

Since I no longer work in the city and my daily interaction with the avenues and cross-streets are usually confined to returning from Central Park laps, I rarely go over the bridge to hang out. With the weather cooling down, I decided to make the Sunday trek across the bridge and see some friends. First up was Rapha’s Cycling Club for a coffee and to shoot Cassidy‘s tattoo. Pretty good right?

Yes, today was an awesome day. The weather was hot and humid and that meant one thing: mid-day bike rides in Central Park. Putting on the Peal Izumi and filling up the water bottles with all ice is the best remedy for the heat. So I left my apartment after fighting with Verizon and headed into Central Park via the 59th St. Bridge.

Many Thanks to Brouwerij Lane

All day I’m bugging out because I had no internet when I got an email from David at Brouwerij Lane telling me to come down, have a beer and use their WiFi. If you’re in Greenpoint (the best hood in Brooklyn), swing through, have a pint and take a bottle home. Good beer is like a good bike part, it’s worth the extra percentage.

For the record, I refuse to park it in a coffee shop and blog! Rather be buzzed than cranked on coffee.

Speedvagen: Countdown to Cross Season

If there’s one thing that Portland knows best it’s cyclocross. Well that and maybe coffee. Coffee, cross and bikes. The Speedbloggen has a stuffed to the brim post today about the 2011 cross bikes and included in the mix is this shot of one of the Vanilla fork crowns. Who says steel is dead? Would ya look at that thing! So nice. It comes from the Pacenti Cycle Design and is an homage to the old Ritchey mountain crowns. Columbus steerer too. Check out more photos here.

Tonight was the opening reception at Rapha‘s Cycling Club in the East Village in NYC. I swung through earlier in the day to see how they were doing and saw that everyone was frantically putting the finishing touches on the space so I left and came back for the party.

Velo Cult Book

Velo Cult is putting a book out. Should this be a surprise? No. Hell no. They have some of the nicest photos out of any bike shop / blog out there. Printing a book is the most logical step. Will I buy one? Fuck yes. I can’t wait to see this thing printed up and ready to hit the coffee tables and work benches worldwide. I’m emailing them right now….

NOS Somec ProMAX

NOS Somec ProMAX

If that morning coffee isn’t waking you up, check out this Somec. It’s not just any Somec either. This puppy is NOS and made from the legondary Columbux MAX tubeset. Fillet-brazed (of course, since they didn’t have any lugs for it) and painted to look like a video game from the 1980’s, this Somec will surely turn heads. Leave it to the Aussie smuggler to bring this to our tables this fine (and wet) Monday morning.

On a related note, Columbus has re-issued to the MAX tubeset. If you’re in the market for a custom bike, be sure to look into acquiring some. It’s the nicest tubing I’ve ever ridden and it’d be an awesome track tubeset. They haven’t put it on the site yet, but it’s in stock and ready to ship! Oh and there’s an SL 2009 tubeset too!

For the last three weeks, I’ve been getting out on the road bike at least 4 days a week putting in between 30 and 50 miles each time. Yesterday, Harry from NY Bike Jumble and I met up at 5 Leaves promptly at 8am to ride to Piermont. Sitting outside 5 Leaves was this KHS Aero Track; everyone’s favorite low-pro track bike from the 90’s. This one’s well-ridden and has an unbelievable amount of character.

Check out how the rest of the morning unfolded below.

Central Park Ride Tomorrow with Rapha Condor Sharp

If you’re an early riser you may want to head to this event sponsored by Rapha tomorrow in Central Park. I’m going to try my hardest to be up and ready early enough to make it out. Here’s all the details:

On Thursday April 15th, the car-free early morning riding of Central Park will see more black, white, and pink jerseys and hear more British accents than usual. You are invited to join the Rapha Condor Sharp team as they spin through this world-famous city park.

Meet at 6:00am at the statue in the entrance near Columbus Circle. Once the park re-opens at 7:00am the group will head for coffee, a chat and a quick bite at the Signature Cycles showroom at 80 West End Ave.,Second Floor [64th St. and West End Ave].

With more information at Rapha.

NAHBS 2010: Vanilla Bicycles

It’s no secret that Portland brews a mean cup of coffee and houses some of the United States’ most talented frame builders. Vanilla Bicycles is one of those companies. Sacha White began making bicycles in 1999 and over a decade later, Vanilla is one of the most recognizable names in the handmade bicycle world. This year at the NAHBS, Vanilla displayed their true design intent through their bikes and their booth.

Below are some photos I took at the 2010 NAHBS.

Riding in LA with Congo and Company

I gotta admit, I was on the fence about bringing my bike to LA but I’m glad I did. I don’t think I’ve had that much fun riding in a city in a while. Not since Tokyo. Of course the Mid-West Mayhem was a blast, but that was an event, not a touristy spot-searching riding session.

Congo and the LB cronies rolled over to Orange 20 bikes after Joe from TOLA, Tracko and me had gotten some coffee. From there, we rolled out to a few spots around Silverlake, Echo Park and downtown. Eventually we had like 20 people riding around through LA.

Juan snapped a few shots at a few spots we hit up. Check them out below.

Nick James in the We Ride Boards Show

You remember this right? One of the first posts I made on the new server was Nick James‘ pen and ink drawing entitled Streetwear. Later, Nick penned the John Prolly Adventures and other classic illustrations.

Tonight in Salt Lake City, Nick’s Streetwear piece, with color I might add, will be on display at the MCA Gallery. The show is tonight, Friday, January 29th, 7-11pm. Be sure to check it out if you’re in the neighborhood. More information to come on his blog.
