Racing Towards Red Hook

I caught this the other day and blanked on posting it up. Watch as Frank Warren, owner of the Breukelen Coffee House in Crown Heights explains his prep for the Red Hook Crit.

My flight just got in, I’m going on 2 hours of sleep so I’ll be brief with these posts.

Dave Trimble: Monster Track XII Photos

Man, I feel like this year there were more photographers at Monster Track than before. I know Tak and Ed Glazar had to be there (we’ll probably see those later on) and Cycle Angelo‘s are looking good but I’m really into the ones that Red Hook Crit organizer David Trimble took. Look at JT wearing blue sweatpants just so he could match his Legor Cicli track bike.

JT, what happened man? I hear Crihs had a 12-minute spread. Did you stop for a cup of coffee?

Brenton Salo: Globe Bikes’ West End Bike

I really love Globe Bikes. I’m also a big fan of Garret Chow’s work and Brenton Salo’s photography. So we’ve got three of some of my favorite things here. Add the Berthoud / Brooks style saddle, a quill stem, elegant mustache bars and simple track-inspired cranks and you’ve got a pretty elegant solution to a rain bike / commuter.

What I’m not really into is the three-speed electronic shifting found on the West End Bike. Maybe 8-speed Alfine would make more sense? No derailleur to bang on a door jam, no maintenance and more choices. Other than that, the paint job is killer, the coffee-carrier is sick (aftermarket please!) and the gum wall cross tires look rad.

I can’t wait to see these hit the shops. I bet they’ll sell!

Edit: I just realized this could be Brenton’s own build and not the specified factory complete. Either way, I’d love to find out more about it.

A Day in 10 Photos: 02.17.2011

Today was a beast of a day. We were all out last night drinking and I had been on my road bike hard all week. Needless to say the last thing I wanted to do was ride around but with prospects of new spots on the horizon, I drank another cup of coffee and headed out on my fixed with Eric on his BMX.

Ask Prolly: Would You Ever Pay for Bike Parking?

Parking your bike in NYC can be a pain in the ass. In the last few weeks I’ve had my saddle bag raided, my Hold Fasts stolen and even had someone try to steal my front wheel while it was locked to my bike! With all the thievery going on, a lot of people ask me if I would ever pay for bike parking in NYC. It’s a weighted question. A lot of the rates that are advertised in parking garages around midtown are way too high but when I came across this sign in the East Village yesterday I considered, for the first time, using bike parking.

I said considered. Personally, I just don’t lock my nice bikes up in the city and if I do, I lock it with a few locks. But that doesn’t stop people from ganking your saddle, bars or even toe straps. I guess there’s no real answer to this question but if I worked at an office that didn’t allow me to bring my bike up, I’d totally lock it up in a secure location for $1 a day. That’s less than a cup of coffee for peace of mind.

Andrew Blackman: Bicycle Film Festival Copenhagen Videos

Ah Copenhagen, the place where you can buy a townie from a vending machine. Where the streets are without glass and the coffee shops give you musette bags with your croissant. Ok, that’s all a stretch but it makes sense that the Bicycle Film Festival would choose Copenhagen as its newest host city. Because, afterall the bicycle is an essential part of Copenhagen’s culture. Andrew Blackman put together two shorts to promote the BFF this year. Above is entitled “Exercycle Projector” and one more, “Long John Living Room” is below.
