Road to Red Hook Video

We posted the trailer for this a bit back, now here’s the full-length video, Road to Red Hook.

“Road to RedHook tags along with 4 talented women as they gear up for the 2nd year of the Women’s RedHook crit–a fast, competitive bike race in Brooklyn, New York.
Anyone can look pro with some good glasses and fancy spandex, but the interviews uncover these girls to be sweet, funny, hopeful, and above all– totally human. The participants involved with this video want to remind all those hopefuls out there that sometimes the hardest part of racing is just getting to the starting line.

Seven Months of Shredding on the Santa Cruz Stigmata

Reportage

Seven Months of Shredding on the Santa Cruz Stigmata

“If Ferrari made an off-road vehicle, that’s what it’d be like to ride the Santa Cruz Stigmata.”

That’s been the simile I’ve used countless times when describing how this bike rides. In fact, I still can’t think of a better way of describing the Stigmata’s handling and capabilities.

Seven months is a long time for a review and honestly, I wanted to get this up before ‘cross season began but with very little expectations to race this season, I quickly realized that I had been using the Stigmata in every other way than it’s market intention. That’s the beauty of ‘cross bikes though, right?

Let’s step back a bit and look at what this bicycle is.

Marc’s LOW Track Crit Bike

Reportage

Marc’s LOW Track Crit Bike

In the world of track crits, like Red Hook Crit and this weekend’s Wolf Pack Hustle’s Civic Center Crit, racers quickly realize that a standard track bike might have its limitations.

Let’s look at what a track bike is designed for: all left turns on a banked velodrome, with walls around 45º steep for a 250m track.

These crits however are completely different. For starters, the amount of people racing is almost three times what a miss-n-out or win-in-out would have competing. There are both right and left turns, yet no banked walls. In road criterium racing, you can coast through the corners and rail all the turns. With a track bike you need to pedal all the time.

That’s where Marc’s one-off comes into play. He and Andrew from Low Bicycles discussed options for a bike that was bred from the conditions of track crits. How is it different? Well, in all things related to bike design, a few millimeters here or there can make a huge difference. The bottom bracket is higher, to make for more crank clearance in the turns and the wheelbase is a bit longer to make it easier to hit those turns at speed.

So far Marc has raced three or four crits on it, as well as taking it to Hellyer, the local track to race.

Me, I just think it’s a beautiful fucking machine. Made in San Francisco by Andrew Low, fitted with Ritchey parts and with PAUL wheels made by Fresh Air Bicycles.

Restore Red Hook Jersey

This in from G+D:

WHAT HAPPENED?
Our neigborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn has been left flooded and in shambles following Hurricane Sandy. Countless homes, shops, artist studios, restaurants, bars, and workshops have been devastated. Despite this recent hardship, the heart of this vibrant community cannot be washed away. While our own storefront office flooded, the losses are minimal compared to the dire situation in the neighborhood.

WHAT’S NEXT?
Castelli Cycling has generously stepped up to produce a pair of special benefit jerseys with us to help raise funds for Red Hook’s recovery. Designed by Jonah Birns, the jerseys will bepre-sold exclusively on Gage+DeSoto until December 1st. After production is complete, we will be shipping these in mid-January.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
All profits from these jerseys will be split between the Red Hook Initiative (RHI) and Restore Red Hook (RRH). The RHI–an established community center–is operating as the critical organizer of relief efforts. Since then, Restore Red Hook has also been set up to help the many devastated small businesses of Red Hook reopen their doors as soon as possible.

Trimble Racing and Gage + Desoto have scrapped together a rather nice office in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The light and airy space will be part Red Hook Crit office and part Gage + Desoto storefront. While I’m not sure where it is exactly, or their “open hours”, I’m sure Dave will update us in the comments. I gotta say Dave, you are doing big things. Stoked to see where RHC goes this year!

Bench Minor Polo Tournament Photos

Along with the Red Hook Crit, the Bench Minor Polo Tournament brought in people from all over to NYC just in time for the warm spring weather. Polo players from Milwaukee and even Paris showed up to partake one of the most pro-looking tournaments I’ve ever been to. There were jerseys, face masks and even a net around the goals. The equipment wasn’t the only aspect of the tournament that was refined; Doug at Hardcourt Bike Polo even had a list of rules and regulations posted through Google Docs. Now, I don’t follow polo enough to be a good judge for organization, but when I rolled up to the tournament, it looked incredibly legit. The drafting system that was used to set up the brackets offered a really well-balanced competitive atmosphere.

After hanging out for a few hours, I managed to snap a few photos documenting the competitive atmosphere and intensity of this polo tournament. Check them out below.
