For many people, shooting professional cycling with film is unheard of, much less a Hasselblad. While many magazines and news sites only care about those finish line and podium shots, a few photographers are out there, looking a little deeper. Samson’s coverage of the Amgen Tour of California came out great. I love this shot so much, right down to the excited fan, just barely an inch off the ground. Check the rest out here.

Oh man. This is too good. Josh Atkins was the only rider in the entire ATOC that went for the dollar hand-off at the first KOM on Mt. Baldy. Initially, he thought it was a beer hand off, but then he saw the dollar, sniping it from the top. Brian Vernor took this amazing photo, which I’m reposting from TRACKO and rumor has it that Ms. Emily Maye has another photo to add to the series. Let’s see that one Emily!

I love cycling.
My absolute favorite day of the #ATOC was the Mt. Baldy stage. We woke up, rode to the first KOM and hung out all afternoon in the blazing sun. After shouting and being utter jackasses all day, we took off down the descent. What a day!
While I was shooting on the top of the Rapha Mobile Cycle Club, I passed my T4 off to Jeremy Dunn, who assisted in the KOM shots. Thanks to Jeremy for getting some of the action and thanks to everyone who made that day so rad.

I love the old Somerville-era Indy Fab bikes from the early 2000’s. When I walked past this beaut at the Golden Saddle Cyclery Champagne Brunch, I stopped in my tracks and immediately began to look it over. Who on Earth had such style? Turns out, it was Cole. Big surprise there. You’ll recognize this mustache’d face from a lot of the Rapha imagery and videos. I’ve spent some time hanging out with Cole but had never seen this steed.
After shooting a few photos of it leaned against a wall, I got Cole to take it out into the street for some 50mm lens love. Man, what a looker!

As Garrett and Walton were packing their car up to head back to SF from the Golden Saddle Cyclery Champagne Brunch, I grabbed his Specialized S-Works road bike and took a few photos of it. I don’t think you can get anymore balleur than this. Slammed, drop stem, murdered out paint and coming in around 13lbs, this bike is a beast!

Unifying themes aren’t the easiest to identify while you’re out in the field. That said, there’s one thing I was always on the look out for during my coverage of the AMGEN Tour of California: the American flag.
