Pat Cummins is a big sweetheart. The ex-MMA fighter is a lover of singlespeeds and mountains. I shot some photos for Outside Magazine of him a few years back on his rigid Niner. He usually rides his singlespeed exclusively but his recent acquisition has some extra gears. Read on below for some photos of this new build by the Cub House, with words by Danny from the Cub House.
If you don’t know Patrick Cummins he is probably the most intimidating looking nicest guy you will ever meet. If you do know him then you know he shreds on his single speed MTB. When he came to the shop with this Niner frame in a box he had some rad ideas, and that is the most fun part about building up bikes.
Taking what someone has in their head and working together to make it happen. He had a pretty simple but clear vision in mind, as we chatted through the gate at the Cub House (this build was started when we had the shop set up for outdoors only). He said “I want some gold, I want some bourbon Chris King stuff and I want my Niner to be super fun” and we went from there. Which brings up another point.
It’s easy to get lost in the fancy parts we all know and love when doing custom builds, I know I was. Patrick wanted a gold stem and seat post to accent the bourgon Chris King parts. I got stuck trying to think of what cockpit parts to use, or what we could do for some custom anodization until he emailed a photo of a Promax stem, and look at the result. It’s awesome. It might not be a $300 stem and ultra fancy seatpost but the impact they have are great.
Overall even though it took a little while to hunt down all the parts, the whole build came out unique and Pat couldn’t be happier.
