Today on Readers’ Rides, Jerry shares his Craigslist Stumpjumper build from Central Oregon.

Here’s my bike I recently put together. Picked up this early nineties Stumpjumper frame on CL for a whole $25.00. I wanted to build a comfortable riding cruiser/clunker(Stumpclunker ?) that rode well on almost anything. Loops that include pavement, cinder, gravel, mellow singletrack and abandoned double track are easily found here in Central Oregon. Looking forward to loading it up with bags, racks/baskets for some steelhead fishing, and bike camping this fall.

As you can see there are no high-end blingy bits. I just used parts that I had on hand or that were readily available. The frame originally was spec’d with a suspension fork, I ditched that and went with a rigid suspension-corrected steel fork from Soma. The Rolf Propel wheels were another CL find. I couldn’t pass up that spoke lacing.

I’m running 2.3 Compass(Rene Herse) Rat Trap Pass tires. The drivetrain is 9 speed Micro Shift using their Advent shifters with an 11-42 cassette.

So far I’ve haven’t really needed to use the front derailleur so looking to be 1×9 in the near future. Brakes are Tektro cantilevers ( iso vintage XTR V brakes !) and Tektro levers. The Jones Loop bars and Ergon GP 1 grips definitely give it the “cruiser” feeling ride I was looking for. I’ve only put about 100 miles on it so far but super stoked on how it rides!
