Bikepacking Roots: The Bikepacker’s Guide Virtual Workshop Series

Bikepacking Roots is releasing The Bikepacker’s Guide Virtual Workshops Series, presented by Revelate Designs. This educational how-to series will provide bikepackers (and aspiring bikepackers) with a virtual learning opportunity to develop and strengthen essential skills for bikepacking. Building on the 2nd Edition of the print Bikepacker’s Guide, Kait Boyle and guests will teach online workshops for beginner and intermediate bikepackers.

These virtual workshops are open to all interested participants. Each workshop will start with the fundamentals appropriate for a beginner bikepacker and progress to develop knowledge and skills that will enhance an intermediate bikepacker’s skillset.

“The Bikepacker’s Guide Virtual Workshop series is exciting for us because it is yet another step toward our mission to lower the barriers to bikepacking. We’ll continue to seek ways to educate people in person but a free virtual workshop series greatly increases access to bikepacker education, and I’m excited to be available as an expert in the field for people to learn directly from and share my experience with.” -Kait Boyle

Kait Boyle is a co-founder of Bikepacking Roots, the author of the Bikepacker’s Guide and brings over a decade of teaching field-based, expeditionary adventure education, including designing and teaching the first ever bikepacking course at Prescott College, to these workshops. She started bikepacking in 2011 and has since bikepacked on 5 different continents and extensively throughout the western U.S, on a variety of styles of routes and bikes, from single to 30-day trips, and in all the conceivable climates. This workshop series is an opportunity and open invitation to learn directly from Kait and get personalized mentorship in bikepacking.

Wolf Tooth 8-Bolt CAMO Spider for SRAM Cranks $29.95

If you find yourself wanting to swap out chainring sizes for whatever reason and hate having to remove your crank arms each time, this is the product for you. Wolf Tooth’s CAMO 8-bolt spider is for use with the SRAM 8-Bolt cranksets that have a removable spider. The CAMO chainring system was created by Wolf Tooth engineers for chainline and material optimization on direct mount style chainrings. The key advantages include:

  • Perfect chainline for wear and shifting precision
  • Optimal material usage for weight, stiffness, and wear
  • Spend less for chainring swapping by buying only the chainring, compared to chainrings that have an integrated spider
  • Swapping chainrings is very fast with only five small bolts and no nuts
  • Availability, as Wolf Tooth has many direct mount options: round or oval, stainless or aluminum, for several cranksets.
  • Wolf Tooth’s patented Drop-Stop® wide/narrow tooth profile for the ultimate chain retention and mud shedding ability

New Albion Frame Privateer in Blue and Matte Black $499.99 frame $169.99 fork

Still bummed on the Cross Check leaving Surly’s catalog, well, here’s another great option from our friends at SOMA. Build the Privateer into a versatile “all rounder” road bike, a medium duty tourer, a flat bar commuter with full fenders, or even a gravel bike. Compatible with derailleurs, internal geared hubs or single speed MTB hubs.

This latest update features 650b wheel specific design for the three smallest sizes, which reduces toe overlap that is common on smaller bikes using 700c wheels. For this batch, SOMA have also added a huge 64cm frame size.

  • Tange Infinity (Champion) double butted CrMo steel main tubes; tapered CrMo rear tubes
  • Fits racks and fenders
  • Three sets of water bottle bosses
  • Extra tall headtube makes upright builds look better
  • Pump peg on headtube
  • Horizontal dropouts allows for geared, internal geared and single-speed builds (we recommend enclosed cam style QR’s for these type of dropouts)
  • 700c: Sizes 52-60cm are designed to fit cantilever brakes and V-brake and can fit tires up to 700c x 41mm
  • 650b: Sizes 44-50cm are designed to fit V-brakes/Mini V-Brakes and can fit tires up to 650b x 47mm
  • Optional fork available (Investment cast lugged crown, 50mm rake, low rider pannier braze-ons, double eyelets at dropouts) (700c-specific frames compatible with forks that have a 390-400mm axle to crown with 44 – 50mm rake/offset)
  • Sizes: 650b: 44, 48, 50cm; 700c: 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 64cm
  • Paint: Matte Black
  • Part Requirements: Seatpost: 27.2mm OD, Front derailleur: 28.6mm OD bottom pull, Headset: 1-1/8″, external cup, Rear hub: 130 or 135mm (spacing is 132.5mm), Brakes: Cantilevers or V-brakes, Bottom bracket: 68mm shell, English threaded.
  • Matching Tanaka Flying Fish aluminum fenders available. (700c x 47mm only)

How I Built a Steel Bike

If you want to learn how to build a bicycle, The Bicycle Frame Building School in Tucson Arizona is the best bicycle frame making school in North America.

I chose to study with Frame Builder, Dave Bohm because he has a wealth of knowledge on metal working, bicycles, tools, and the bicycle industry at all levels. Plus, this hands-on course offered me the chance to not only learn how to braze metal, miter tubes and design a bicycle frame geometry from scratch, it also let me make my own bicycle fork, which is not common at a in a bicycle frame building course.

I brought my own safety glasses right out of my Opa’s old workshop. I like It was special to give them a new project to work on, especially one that my Opa would probably be really proud of.

I also brought my BMC Time Machine Road bike to Tucson so that I could ride this part of Arizona’s most renowned cycling routes, including The Loop cycling trail, and Mount Lemmon!
