Like a repair kit, a packable, just-in-case layer is something we always throw on the bike before setting off, but like many things bike-related, we felt we needed to tweak the standard to achieve our ideal iteration. In collaboration with California-based cycling apparel manufacturer, Voler, our new Feldspar Ride Jacket ($119.99) hits the mark. This super breathable, minimal, USA-made layer packs up to burrito size and provides the sweet spot in protection for most three-season riding. After thorough testing and design back-and-forth with Voler, the unisex Feldspar jacket is finally on our digital shelves, ready to ship to you today IRL. Let’s take a long exposure look at them below…
Inspired by the framebag for our special edition Radavist x Mosaic bike, the Feldspar got the same pattern treatment in two colorways: Monsoon Camo is a clay color inspired by our summer seasonal showers and Star Trails is the black jacket, a tribute to the night sky (or Star Raiders, iykyk). Feldspar is a rock-forming silicate mineral that makes up over 50% of Earth’s crust and it’s a common mineral found in sandstone here on the Colorado Plateau.
My problem with a lot of riding jackets is the lack of breathability—they get too hot, too fast on anything but a pure descent and the result is being stuck in a clammy trash bag-like sack. Voler went into great detail to prevent the trash bag feel, ensuring these jackets would really breathe by incorporating a series of vents. The back has open venting, and a perforated panel extends from the armpit with small triangular stretchy vents at each wrist.
The silhouette of the Feldspar is slimmer than most MTB jackets, providing a closer-to-body fit that’s more compatible with all types of riding. If you like a slimmer cut for your road or gravel rides, order your standard size. If you like a top layer that’s a bit baggier for your MTB or cycling tours, order a size up. Bryan (above left) is 5’11” and wearing a size medium, Kyle (above center) is 6’0″ and wearing a size medium, John (above right) is 6’2″ and wearing a size XL.
The hood size is dialed to fit under a helmet while still accommodating a cycling cap and features a short brim to keep the rain out.
Don’t be mistaken: these are not intended to function as rain jackets. Due to the venting panels, these jackets are not waterproof but the DWR treatment provides a water-resistant finish, making them equipped to carry you through light showers.
These photos illustrate how a zipper works. ;-) Joking aside, we used two-way zippers, allowing you to unzip from the bottom or the top. In addition to the heroic feeling that riding with a cape provides, the bottom zip can loosen the fit for increased riding pack-compatibility and allows for adjustability venting from the saddle while climbing.
