Keeping Cross Bikes Weird

After finally slowing down, and slipping into my routine back home, I got bombarded with out of town company. Austin’s a city that fairs well with guests. Typically, all I have to do is take my friends to my local spots and they have a blast.

Unlike previous trips, I rode around without a camera, but as the saying goes: the best camera is the one you have on you. Here are two iPhone photos from this past week that embodies how I like to ride my cross bike in Austin.

Last night’s Keep Cross Weird race was a huge success. 50 racers registered and a great spectator crowd formed. There was a lot of mud, even more running and the fine folks at Yellow Jacket Social Club kept the drinks coming all night.

I’m still playing host to a group of people, so the site will be kinda quiet today. Oh and I didn’t even take a camera to the race with me. Which is very weird. Gideon did however, so check out his photos on the Beat the Clock Facebook!

If you shot photos, please email them to me!

Last weekend, here in Austin, the land of the perpetual music festival, crowds descended upon Zilker park for Fun Fun Fun Fest. I steered clear of the crowds, but some of my friends dove right in. One of which being Cody Nutter, who managed to get some rad photos at the vert ramp. Check a few more out here!

Man, it don’t get much betta’ then this. When Sean from Team Dream Bicycling Team took Andy from FYXO and me on a ride in the Topanga hills, we were lead to believe it would be an easy spin. Actually, come to think of it, I’m pretty sure I said I would only ride if it were an easy spin… Andy and I had just done a big ride the day before, I was very sunburnt and had sand in my crotch.

That didn’t stop Sean, who was amped to show us his home trails…

… and a little sand in the crotch didn’t stop FYXO from bringing his DSLR on the ride to capture some radness. Head over to FYXO to see the full scoop!

Help Out Chris Igleheart!

Chris Igleheart is one of the raddest builders. His history dates back to working at Fat City Cycles in Somerville. Last year, he moved to Portland, Oregon to continue building for himself and also for a couple of notable companies.

A few weeks ago, he was struck by a car on his commute home and he’s out over $15,000. There’s a YouCaring site set up and they’ve already raised over $9,000. One more big push will surely get him there.

I’m not telling you to donate, because I hate it when people do that, but if you would like to, do so at the I Heart IGLE YouCaring site!

… and two rad kits!

Ty was up in Portland to race a Cross Crusades and hang out (that dude lives the dream) with the lovely couple behind the Athletic. Speaking of the Athletic, you’ve gotta pop over to see more photos from the event and of that killer kit. Seriously, sign me up for one!

Yonder Journal: Ty Hathaway’s Post 2013 Tour Divide Interview

This is one of my favorite people on the planet. He’s inspired me to remember just one thing about cycling: have fun (or at least look rad). Yonder Journal has just posted an interview with Ty, right after he completed the 2013 Tour Divide.

“I was always tired to a certain degree because any day that you ride a mountain bike one hundred and forty miles you’re going to be tired. And if you wake up and do it again, and again, for twenty-three days in a row, you’re going to be tired all the time. So basically I was tired all the time. I feel great now though.”

It’s a hell of a read, so check it out at Yonder Journal!

I Just Got Home and I Already Miss It

I Just Got Home and I Already Miss It

… Literally. Just walked in the door after 24+ hours of traveling and all I can think is how for the first time all year, I finally felt like this last trip to Australia was truly a vacation. I rode four times total, aside from pedaling around town each day, ate without guilt, drank without worry, my camera barely left my bag, I shot maybe half a roll of 35mm film and we didn’t do one of those big big rides. Oh and I ate a lot of meat pies.

It’s weird how a place across the globe can feel like home, and in a lot of ways, can make travel there somewhat lazy. The weather was shit 95% of the days, cold, windy, rainy. We had two sunny days, luckily, both of which were spent on good rides. I just felt, kind of like doing nothing. This year’s been really tough and before you chastise me with some “boo hoo, I have to travel all the time and ride my bike” remark, trust me, it gets exhausting!

Luckily, I’ve got some good friends down in Melbourne and I was perfectly content keeping Dan and Malachi company all day. Maybe it’s the jetlag talking but this trip down under was a sobering one and yet, I kinda wanna go back once it warms up…

It’s Been Great Hanging at Shifter Bikes

When I’m in Melbourne, I usually set up my desk at Shifter Bikes and it’s not just because I enjoy shooting all of the Beautiful Bicycles that come through the door. I really enjoy Dan’s company and being able to rant with someone about life’s little difficulties… Blah blah blah bicycles.

With the Melbourne Cup coming this weekend he’s closing shop, so today will be the last day I’ll be there working. If you’re out and about, or you’ve got a bike to share, swing by!

Wednesday Night at the Road Crits in Melbourne

Last night, I went out to the local road crit here in Melbourne to watch the Saint Cloud guys race. The weather has been kind of shitty here over the past few weeks, but luckily the rain held off all night. After all the grades were done, we got burritos and drank a few beers. I didn’t shoot many photos, so what you see is what you get… I really like the panning shot of Tristen.
