What better way to segue into NAHBS and documenting handmade bicycle frames than to visit a facility that produces handmade carbon wheels. Today I’ve been touring the Zipp factory in Indianapolis where I got to see the process from cutting sheets of carbon to testing current and future products. As you could imagine, a lot of this process is top secret, but Zipp allowed photos of specific areas throughout the afternoon.
Expect more reportage to come before NAHBS content begins.

Macro photography is a delicate art and while I prefer to err on the “stopped down” side of things, sometimes a shallow depth of field works, especially in a controlled lighting environment like a studio. Flickr user Twenty Tree has just uploaded a photoset of this Stoemper ‘Cross bike shot against a black backdrop and my favorite photo is of the head badge. Tenspeed Hero has begun a new project they’re calling Women’s Elite Racing, where they catch up with pro 1/2 women cyclists, toss them a few questions and post the interview. The first one being with the Schneider Sisters. Check out the interview at Tenspeed Hero.
While plenty of companies select a blank frame from a catalog and slap a few stickers on them before calling them a day, Fairdale takes more time to design their frames from the ground up. Taj recently illustrated a story on the Fairdale blog, explaining how they design their bikes, particularly the Goodship.

Photographer Andy Bokanev recently compiled a selection of photos from this past year’s cyclocross season into a 45-page zine. The zines will be made in Seattle, in a limited edition of 200 are are only $20 with domestic shipping coming to $3 and international $10 with a late February delivery.
