Farewell NYC Shop Visit: The New Continuum Cycles

If there is one shop that’s shown an immense growth since I’ve been gone, it’s Continuum Cycles. Jeff and Fritz have expanded their small, cramped space into a sprawling bicycle shop. With three storefronts, it’s easily one of the bigger shops in the East Village. The retail space is filled with some of Jeff’s private collection, along with many vintage and modern frames from around the world. Track, road, rando, it doesn’t matter, chances are they’ve got your future frame or bicycle in stock.

Farewell NYC Shop Visit: Affinity Cycles

If any shop was my LBS here in NYC, it’s Affinity. Jason, Ben, Sammy and Jeff were like my second family. They were always down to dish out a bit of shit-talking, help me out with my builds and involve me in projects. Out of all the bike shops in NYC, I’m going to miss these guys the most. When I stepped in the door last Friday night, it looked like a different shop. They’re making way for their Mission Workshop in-store-extraveganza and some new additions found their way onto the walls.

Farewell NYC Shop Visit: GRIME Bikes

NYC can support an almost unlimited amount of bike shops. Even to the point where specialized boutiques can thrive. That’s where GRIME Bikes‘ storefront comes in. They won’t fix your flat or adjust your derailleur, but they’ve got everything you need to get your fixed freestyle bike rolling and more. I wasn’t around for the grand opening of the store, but I caught up with Mike and Joey on Saturday to take some photos of their space in Chinatown.

Another shop that’s been a staple in my life here in NYC over the years is NYC Velo. Andrew and the guys do a great job in catering to the neighborhood commuters, PRO racers and the younger, hip crowd. NYC Velo has a great collection of interestingness, spanning the ages of cycling. From Fat Chances, to Richard Sachs cross bikes and Eddy Merckx 7-Eleven frames, the shop is littered with Beautiful Bicycles.

Another shop on my list for my Farewell NYC Shop Visits was Brooklyn Machine Works. Over the years, Joe, Ken and the guys have become some of my best friends in the cycling industry. I know that no matter what’s going on in the shop, they’ll take five and show me around. And usually there’s something rad going on. I already covered the shop months back, but a lot has changed for BMW since then.

Farewell NYC Shop Visit: Outlier’s Brooklyn Showroom

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I am moving all of my belongings out of my apartment here in Brooklyn and will be relocating full-time to Austin. It was a decision that everyone close to me supports and part of the fun of moving away from NYC has been seeing the piecemeal and exponential changes my dearest friends are undertaking here.

NYC is a fast-paced world. As a small-business owner, you either flounder or flourish. Outlier chose the path of the latter. In a short amount of time, their company has grown right before my eyes and a tell-all sign is their increase in stock and hours are their Brooklyn showroom. Let’s take another, more recent look at the Outlier showroom.

An Afternoon with the Green Mamba and Lake Travis Cyclery

Yesterday, I left the confines of East Austin to visit Lake Travis Cyclcery. Located about 20 miles southwest of Austin, the guys at LTC have just opened a new location. After moving from a massive warehouse, they’re still settling into their new space. I have been conversing with the Green Mamba, their pick-up and delivery van, on Twitter for a while and decided it was time to check out the shop.

Shop Visit: Seven Cycles

One of the most impressive shops I’ve ever set foot in is Seven Cycles. When we showed up at their facilities and walked in the door, I knew I was in for a treat. Rob so kindly opened the factory to us, after handing us safety glasses and before I knew it, I was getting the proper tour of their facilities. It’s not every day that you can visit a streamlined production facility in the US of A and I was blown away!

Shop Visit: Mostowy Bicycles & Bicycle Bills

Arny is somewhat of a legend in the Boston area. When I said I was going around profiling local shops and builders, everyone said “You have to go see Arnie Mostowy at Bicycle Bills“. Sure enough, within minutes of visiting the shop, I saw exactly what they were talking about first hand. Arnie also builds bicycles under the name Mostowy in the basement and there’s a lot to be said about their utilitarianism and straight-forward functionality.

Shop Visit: Superb Bicycle

One of the last spots that I visited in Boston was Superb Bicycle. With a lack of fixed and track bike specific shops in the Boston and Somerville area, the crew definitely have the city on lock. From vintage to new school, their shop is loaded with road, fixed and track bike accessories, components and frames.

Shop Visit: Geekhouse Bikes

The first stop I made during my Boston trip was Geekhouse bikes. Known mostly for their curvy-tubed, triple triangle Rockcity track bikes, Geekhouse has come a long way since Marty first learned to build bikes. Now the brand offers a wide-variety of bicycles. From 26″ dirt jumpers, to touring bikes, to cross, to road and track bikes.

Shop Visit Teaser: A.N.T.

Yesterday we rode out to Holliston to visit A.N.T. and document Mike’s work space. Since I’ve shown you guys teasers from other shops, I figured I should do the same for A.N.T. I was super impressed with seeing Mike in his shop. He’s such a nice guy and his bikes are truly unique. Besides, the A.N.T. water-jet cut pedal cages were so nice!

Be on the look out for the full shop visit once I get back to NYC! Thanks again Mike!
