The Mission Workshop Factory 5 Shanghai Party

Reportage

The Mission Workshop Factory 5 Shanghai Party

As the culmination of the Mission Workshop China Bike Tour with Factory 5, we threw a huge party last night. 700 bottles of beer, 2 Pocari Sweats and a few 2 liters of Sprite brought in around 400 people throughout the evening. Shanghai’s bike scene is a mix of ex-pats and local Chinese riders, so the crowd was quite interesting from a westerner’s point of view. I had a mini-photo show from some photos I posted on the site, James played some rough-cuts of the Mission Workshop videos and Shanghai brought the fun.

Tomorrow morning we all leave China and I still haven’t even begun to process this trip. I’ll share with you some thoughts later on, but for now check out some narrated photos from the party in the Gallery!

More on the Red Bull Mini Drome in Brooklyn

You pumped yet? The Red Bull Mini Drome Event in Brooklyn is going to be quite the party.

“100 bicycle speed freaks will initially race against the clock for ten laps around this mini version of a typical velodrome, usually located in arenas or outside and typically cover about 100,000 square feet. The field will get narrowed down to 32, who will race head-to-head in a bracket style competition- a different kind of March madness.”

The event will be hosted by David Ortiz
Special Performance by NINJASONIK

Location:
Bushwick Church
626 Bushwick Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11206

When this project was first proposed to me, all I thought was “this is too good to be true” and after what seems to be a maddening process of pulling everything together, we’re good to go! Here’s the official blurb from Mission Workshop:

“Follow John Watson of Prollyisnotprobably.com and the Mission Workshop crew as they ride through China’s Yangtze river delta on a photo exploration of bike culture with the help of the guys at Factory Five. Visit the Mission Workshop Blog as they travel through the world’s largest urban population in Shanghai and also explore the ancient architecture of the Chinese countryside.”

To start off the trip, I’ll be in Taiwan in time for the Taipei International Cycle Show before we fly out to Shanghai. This is one part of the world I’ve always wanted to see and I cannot wait to share my photos with you all.

Expect daily updates both here and on the Mission Workshop blog, as well as on Instagram @JohnProlly @MissionWorkshop.

Wolfpack Hustle Unified Title Race Series 2013

This just in from Chrome:

“Thousands of racers will ascend on and crash the Los Angeles Marathon race course in the dead of the night to compete in one of the most toughest urban cycling races known to man. Chrome has partnered with Red Bull to bring the Wolfpack Hustle Unified Title Series to the next level of urban racing. This is just the first stop of the three race series that will span over several months including a LA Crit, and the 6th St. sprints. Only one man and one woman will be immortalized as winners of the official sacred dog tags which will prove their endurance, speed, and power.”

Wolfpack Hustle takeover! I gotta make it out to at least one of these events in 2013.

Crihs‘ Mission Bay Crit was a huge success in SF and Mike Martin from MASH headed out to capture the night. I love low-light, moody photography like this. I’m stoked to hear this event went off smoothly and can’t wait to see more of these go down in SF.

Check out the official race report at MASH.

Outside is Free at Pearl Velo

Reportage

Outside is Free at Pearl Velo

Saturday night was a blur. The anxiety of having a photo show had subsided and as the clocked moved closer to the opening hour, all that was on our minds was “will anyone actually come?”. Forecasts were calling for 10″ of snow and there were tons of other events happening. All the worries subsided when the house was packed at 8pm. Then, Lauren surprised me with an unexpected flight in from Austin. The Outside is Free show was a ton of fun. Thanks to everyone who came out, drank, dodged flying dildos and had to sit through my awkward public announcements.

Many thanks to Avery, Pearl VeloBerkeley Supply and PBR for making the night a success. I’ll have zines in stock this week, for anyone who wants to pick up a copy. I didn’t shoot nearly as many photos as I wanted to but check out a select few in the Gallery. Also, if anyone has photos, link them up in the comments!

#OutsideIsFree is Tonight at Pearl Velo

Tonight after NAHBS, the Outside is Free show is happening at Pearl Velo. We were all there late last night hanging our work, sipping bourbon and trying to stay warm. Dustin from Cadence has a pop up shop and will be selling gear, alongside Poler and Pearl Velo’s own merchandise.

Swing by Pearl Velo from 7-10pm. Attendance is limited to invites as long as it doesn’t get too crowded. Check out some previews in the gallery.

The 2013 NAHBS Framebuilder Party

Here’s the official NAHBS Framebuilder Party flier for this year’s event. Like I said, there are a bunch of parties happening Saturday but this one’s for the exhibitors, VIPs and media, at the Colorado Convention Center.

Another related note is the radness that’s been going on in the Velocipede Salon’s Thursday Night Lights thread. Definitely check that out. I wish I had more free time to poke around that forum more often…
