The UCHOF still needs your help to build the largest collection of urban cycling artifacts:
“The Urban Cycling Hall Of Fame serves to spotlight the history and rich culture of cycling in the city. To date we have had hundreds of nominations for potential inductees, the window for this years nominations is closing quick. There will also be a physical Hall Of Fame that will be unveiled at Interbike and we are putting a call out to the community at large for submissions. These items can either be donated or put on loan, we are trying to build the larger collection of Urban Cycling Memorabilia in the world.
Some awesome items have been collected so far, we have Lucas Brunelle’s entire spoke card collection (which is massive). We also have artwork from Greg Ugalde who’s fine work has graced nearly every major Alley Cat in NYC for the last decade including Monster Track. Brad from Urban Velo donated the first Ghost Bike Sign ever made. A wide variety of other items have been donated and we have Chrome’s RV out on the road doing Collection Sessions in major cities.
We are looking for items that tell the story in every city, from bicycle activism, to races and everything in between. The Hall Of Fame is for everyone, and we want to make sure everyone is represented.
If folks have anything they are interesting in submitting for consideration it can be done by emailing your submissions here or posting them on Instagram and tagging them with @UrbanCyclingHOF and the hashtag #uchof. We need to communities support in order to ensure that nothing is left out and the collection continues to grow over the years.
Ride safe, keep the rubber side down.”

If you’re in or around Seattle this weekend, try to make it to the NACCCs! Even if you don’t race, the organizers could use your help as a volunteer. See more at the NACCC website.
During my last trip in SF, I was asked by Bike Mag to document Mission Workshop‘s newest “Ask a Founder” event. The guest? Keith Bontrager, one of the forefathers of American mountain biking. I really enjoy shooting events like this and it’s not everyday that I become a gun for hire, so I had fun with it.
Listening to a guy like Keith speak about the early days of mountain biking and the inevitable sale of his name to Trek was extremely insightful. Back then, knowledge was gained through experience and that experience was a powerful tool. No one was sitting on Keith’s shoulder telling him what to do. He went with what he knew and that was the motorcycle.
An ex-motocross racer, Keith was the first to reappropriate many technologies to cycling. He designed the first Rock Shox fork, something that still, to this day is not a well-known fact. Keith also developed one of the, if not the first full-suspension bikes with Kestrel, which also used one of the first v-brakes. All derived from motocross technologies.
At some point during the talk, Keith said something along the lines of “if it worked for moto, it’ll work for a bicycle” and it’s true. While the engineering of each component was a new challenge, Keith always worked with what he knew. From dumpster diving 700c rims, to chop and re-roll them to a new MTB standard, to building tig-welded frames with gussets in his shed down in Santa Cruz, Keith’s entrepreneurship paved the way for cycling in the US and beyond.
He continues to work for Bontrager, mostly developing wheels and saddles and spends all of his free time either riding the trails in Santa Cruz, or cooking fresh food from his garden. The Ask a Founder event once again exceeded everyone’s expectations… See more in the Gallery!
I don’t know about you, but I love looking at photos from the Red Hook Crit races from what I would consider photographers who are “new” to documenting cycling. Some of the best editorial pieces in cycling’s history were written by fresh eyes. Ever read Buzzati’s coverage of the 1949 Tour of Italy?
Two years ago at the Red Hook Crit in Brooklyn, I met Kathryn Friedman, a photographer who happened to ride bikes in NYC and after this year’s Navy Yard crit, she emailed me some photos. I figured I’d let the dust settle a bit from one of the most bloody Red Hook Crit events ever, prior to posting…
