The 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup
Words and photos by Chris Lee
I’m not gonna lie, I’m not very well versed or informed about the mountain bike racing circuit. But I do know about the MTB World Cup and when the announcement that it was going to be making a stop in Windham again, I knew I had to make the trip up…
This looks like a wild, wild ride.
“The Night Bison will run for the third time on August 31st, leaving the back lot of NCC at Civil Twilight and winding through 55mi of every terrain possible. For us at Axletree, this is a fun one. They’re all fun. They’re all for fun. But this one is different. It has a neat feel to it that separates it from our other events. And they’re pizza. And posters.
This year, we collaborated with the talented and kind Mr. Jake Early of Tucson, AZ. Jake became a faraway friend of NCC and Axletree when he surprised us with a run of prints earlier this year. We threw out the idea of working together to create a run of Jake’s beautiful serigraph prints to promote and celebrate the event. Our napkin art was slid (emailed) across the table (across the country) last month, and he sent us his print design this week.”
Pre-order a print or a shirt and see more at Ride Axle Tree.
Well, yesterday the 2014 Red Hook Crit Barcelona opened for registration and I missed out on posting it. The men’s field is at waitlist status but the women’s field is open and of course, spectators can go for free.
Head over to the Red Hook Crit Barcelona site for more!
I know you’re prolly out riding, but when you finish up, head over to Golden Saddle, Los Angeles.
How to work the Chris King Gourmet Century
Words and Photos by Eiry Bartlett
A couple of months back I was down in Portland, riding some local hills and catching up with friends who had just completed the Oregon Outback, when an offer of working at the Gourmet Century fell into my lap. I had another tour in the works for the same weekend – it immediately went out the window.
Because of a lack of funding for women’s cycling teams, the Ritte Women’s Team is running a few fund raiser parties to help them get to Ireland to race bikes. Read more about their fund-raising campaign at Rally Me and if you’re in SoCal, head over to the Beers Bikes & Food event at Pedalers Fork tomorrow! See the event details at Facebook.
Trackside ’85 at the Berlin Six Day Race – Staffan Jofjell
Words by Staffan Weigel, photos by Staffan Jofjell
Although it’s far from the spartan life of East Berlin, living in the west part of town is not always easy. The instability in world politics is constantly reminding the citizens of how vulnerable their city is. West Berliners stoically maintain a spirit of normality in their isolation. Their celebrations and manifestations of life before the wall serve as rituals that keep the absurdity of the surrounded city at bay…
The 2014 All City Championship Weekend: Bandit Cross
Words and photos by Chris Lee
The third and last segment of the All City Championships got off to a wet start. With isolated thunderstorms all morning, racers began to trickle in to the start at One On One.
After a quick briefing of the rules and some last minute instructions, racers ran to their bikes for the le mans start and started knocking out checkpoints from their manifest.
In the end it was David Smith and Chelsea Strate that took the win for men’s and women’s category, respectively.

The 2014 All City Championship Weekend: Bandit Cross
Words and photos by Chris Lee
The second installment of the All City Championships got started late in the day. 10pm meet up at One On One and a group ride to the start of the fixed gear crit. We (as a group) rolled up to a vacant events lot next to an overpass. It was incredibly dark with only a couple street lights and a big Budweiser billboard illuminating the race course…
You know what? I had never been to a Wolfpack event before last night. I know, I know, I suck… Luckily, it just so happened that I was in Los Angeles and was able to pedal down Sunset Blvd to the Los Angeles Civic Center to watch the 2014 Wolfpack Hustle Civic Center Crit…
The 2014 All City Championship Weekend: Bandit Cross
Words and photos by Chris Lee
This was part one of three among the events for this year’s All City Championships.
At 6:30 pm racers gathered at a place called Hobo Camp in west Minneapolis.
Jeff Frane from All-City and his race team, Fulton Racing put together a great course ranging from a little mud section, spiraling pedestrian ramps, rail road track barriers, single track leading into a pump track section and a gnarly climb up. I’m calling it a climb up instead of a run up because racers literally had to climb up a mountain of dirt every lap!
At the end, Bandit Cross favorites Fulton racing took a podium sweep in both gender categories.
