Saddle Drive is the Best – Jarrod Bunk

Editor’s note: Jarrod recently attended Saddle Drive, Quality Bicycle Product’s outdoor showcase for their forthcoming products. This included components, accessories and complete bicycles from brands like Salsa, Surly and All City. Jarrod spent two days there, photographing new components on day one and on day two, complete bikes. Here’s day one.

Saddle Drive is the Best

Saddle Drive is an event that is very similar to Frostbike, however the premise is a bit different Saddle Drive allows QBP dealers and media some time on 2017 Products. The tradeshow aspect is a bit toned down, to allow for maximum time on saddle. Following the All City party the night of arrival, day one started off slow. I was able to ride the new Karate Monkey from Surly, The Salsa Cycles Woodsmoke, new Mukluk, and the All City Spacehorse disc to name a few. Spending most all of day one riding bikes in high alpine was, well, one of the best experiences of my life, and being on some stellar bikes made it that much sweeter. Thanks to Kyle and Bobby for taking me to the top at Pluto and shredding back down.

Northstar at Tahoe is the perfect venue to showcase product, for day two I set aside most of my day between seminars to shoot some of the new bikes from Salsa, Surly and All City, Including the new BigBlock, Warbird Carbon/Alloy and Woodsmoke 27.5+. If I could I would’ve stayed the rest of the week just to be able to swing a leg over all of the other bikes. Check out the gallery for some of my favorites.

I’m Heading to Sweden to Document the Sverigetempot

The Sverigetempot is a brevet from the northernmost to the southernmost points in Sweden, which is about 1400 miles. That’s like riding from Seattle to San Diego. Entrants have the option for a 144 or 177 hour cutoff, which is roughly about a week. So far, there are 37 registered for the 177 with only 11 going for the 144. I’ll be there documenting the event and the vernacular of the Swedish countryside alongside Erzui Film, so be sure to follow along at @theRadavist and @ErtzuiFilm on Instagram.

Roll With It Los Angeles Premiere and Happy Hour Group Ride

If you’re planning on attending the Roll With It premiere in Los Angeles this Friday, swing through Golden Saddle Cyclery first at 6pm for happy hour before leaving on a group ride to the screening at 7pm. If you haven’t purchased tickets yet, do so at Eventbrite.

More about Roll With It:

“Going on an overnight camping trip with just what you can carry on a bike seems scary to most people. This quirky, yet artful film debunks those fears, by pulling together strangers with different backgrounds to show how truly joyful and enriching travel by bike can be.

The film will be accompanied by a book that explains, in more granular detail, how anyone can use their bike as a portal to a world of adventure. Look for both the book and the film this June at theaters, bike shops and other venues worldwide.”

The Circles Japan Personal Bike Show

Reportage

The Circles Japan Personal Bike Show

With the Gourmet Century Japan being hosted by Circles, the team at this great bike shop in Nagoya wanted to do something special for their visitors. The Personal Bike Show was a way to introduce the community in Nagoya to various framebuilders and individuals, all of which have found their way to town for the ride… Many of which were visiting Japan for the first time.

The format was simple. Each guest would display their bike they brought for the Gourmet Century, alongside two local builders. After finger foods by Chris DiMinno and plenty of booze, each personality took to the stage to answer a few questions, provided by the Circles team. Things like “what was the scariest moment on the bike?” and “What do you think of Curtis Inglis?”

The evening culminated with Shinya from Circles and Chris King expanding on their opinions about why cycling is so important to a community’s health and growth. It was one of those evenings that left you excited to be a part of a global community of cyclists.

Over the next few days, I’ll be featuring some of the frames that were displayed, along with other scenes from Nagoya and beyond! If you’re going to the Gourmet Century this weekend, I’ll see ya there!

Ladies Only! Bikepacking Golden Saddle Sunday Social Tonight

Hey ladies of Los Angeles!

“Join us for Bikepacking: Camp with your Bicycle. It’s our third installment of Sunday Social, a series of women’s events at Golden Saddle Cyclery. Come hang out, have a drink, and meet some other ladies who ride. This time around, Jocelyn Gaudi of Komorebi Cycling Team from Portland, Oregon will walk us through bikepacking basics and share her experiences as a mountain bike skills teacher and bikepacking ride leader. There will be a short talk and plenty of time to socialize with friends, check out some gear, and ask questions. You’ll learn about bag and rack options for carrying stuff on your bike, what to bring, plus tips and tricks for packing light and staying safe. Beginners welcome! Women only please. Bring your own cup for beverages. See you at the shop!”
