10 Years of the Red Hook Crit Brooklyn

The Red Hook Crit turned 10 this year. I first did the race in 2010, Brian Vernor was also there for the first time, making a movie and shooting photos. Seven years later we were both in the media tent at the 10th edition of the race trying to take it all in while simultaneously being completely blown away by the race. A few days later I got to see his photos from that day (the one’s you see in this gallery) and the images he made just struck a cord with me. The choices he was making about what to photograph and what not to photograph made me feel like he was understanding the race in a way that was similar to mine. So I called him up to just talk about the Crit, his photos, and why he keeps coming back.

I still remember my first conversation (albeit a short one) with Bobby, we were in Tahoe, climbing up to Pluto I was choking on the air, my body had yet to adjust to the elevation. We talked a little bit about an event that I had been following for a few years, one that tests you physically and mentally, where you aren’t just fighting yourself but you’re fighting the course as well. I’m talking about Land Run. On that climb, I was blown away at just how stoked Bobby was that I had heard of their event. From that point on I couldn’t stop thinking about it, weeks passed and it was time to set things in motion, I knew I had to make it to Stillwater this year!

The Shredona MTB Festival

A few weeks back, some of the biggest names in the dirt cycling industry gathered for a long weekend in Sedona, AZ, one of the world’s top destinations for off-road radness for the Sedona MTB Festival. This gathering truly felt like a festival as opposed to an expo or trade show. Live music, food carts, beer gardens and group rides took up much more time than showing off their product. A few familiar faces and plenty of absolutely gorgeous bikes abound. Group rides with local framebuilder Richard of Moustache Cycles, Sam Schultz (another Montana boy) with Rocky Mountain and Kitsbow, a huge group of lady shredders, and a skills clinic taught by Krista Rust made for plenty of fantastic riding and conversation over everything from flow trail to sandstone rock gardens and creek beds.

If you are looking for a trade show that helps build stoke in the MTB community, the Sedona Mountain Bike Festival should be at the top of your list. Ride the latest offerings of MTB tech on world class trails, eat the best damn breakfast burritos in AZ (Thanks 3s in the Trees!), meet local makers (Rogue Panda, Guerrilla Gravity, Moustache Cycles), and soak in spring in the desert. What’s not to love?

Behind the Scenes at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Los Angeles

Track cycling’s draw is massive in Europe, so you never know what you’re going to get when a UCI event rolls into the US, much less, Los Angeles. This year’s UCI Track Cycling World Cup took place at the on the campus of California State University Dominguez Hills in their VELO Sports Center at the StubHub Center, drawing crowds that surprised. Eugene was there, in the pits so to speak, covering the events of the two-day World Cup. The most notable conquests that weekend were the United States’ own Chloe Dygert Individual Pursuit, the New Zealand team took home the event trophy, and French took home the 2016-2017 Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup title.

While track cycling in the United States has yet to reach “Six Days” status, seeing an event like this land in Los Angeles is a win / win.

Cool Stuff at Frostbike

Frostbike. It’s part party, part bike industry tradeshow and all fun. Each year, Quality Bicycle Products, the largest distributor for bike shops in the US, invites a handful of media and tons of shop owners to its facilities in Bloomington, just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Once within its walls, attendees get a sneak peek at many of the brands QBP carries’ newest offerings.

This year, we didn’t line anyone up to cover the event, but Kyle was there for his shop, Golden Saddle Cyclery. Because he is a shop owner and a regular contributor to the Radavist, Kyle’s eye for what is “cool” really resonates. You’ll see a lot from the brands commonly featured here on the site and if you’ve got any questions, just drop them in the comments.
